Umrah from Mumbai 2026: Nusuk e-Visa, Mahram Rules & Charter Flight Timeline (A Pilgrim's Honest Diary)

Umrah from Mumbai 2026: Nusuk e-Visa, Mahram Rules & Charter Flight Timeline

I promised my grandmother I would write this down properly. She has been hearing fragments from cousins about the new Nusuk system, the revised mahram rules, and the charter flights leaving from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and she wanted one clear place where everything was explained the way a Mumbai pilgrim actually experiences it. So this is that diary — written from Bandra, after my own Umrah journey in early 2026.

Why 2026 is Different

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has fully transitioned the Umrah pilgrimage to the Nusuk platform. The old paper-stamped visa via approved agents still exists for group tours, but most independent Mumbai pilgrims I met this season used the Nusuk e-visa. Processing is typically faster — many of my friends received approval within 24–72 hours.

The mahram rule has also softened further. Women aged 18+ may now travel for Umrah without a male guardian if they travel in an organised group registered through a licensed operator. Solo female travel is still discouraged by most experienced agents in Mumbai, and for good reason — the logistics inside Makkah during peak season are unforgiving for first-timers.

The Mumbai Pilgrim's Checklist (Print This)

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond return date
  • Two recent passport-size photographs with white background
  • Confirmed return air ticket (Mumbai → Jeddah or Madinah)
  • Hotel booking within Makkah/Madinah haram radius
  • Meningitis (ACWY) vaccination certificate — mandatory
  • Polio vaccination certificate if you have travelled to certain countries recently
  • Travel insurance covering minimum USD 100,000 medical
  • Nusuk account created with valid Aadhaar-linked mobile
  • PAN and address proof for forex documentation
  • Mahram NOC (if applicable) on stamp paper
  • Ihram clothing, unscented soap, slippers, neck pouch
  • Saudi e-SIM or roaming pack activated before departure

Keep digital copies on Google Drive and printed copies in a transparent folder. The Madinah immigration officer who checked my documents in February was visibly relieved when I handed him a single tidy folder.

Realistic INR Cost Ranges from Mumbai (2026)

These are the ranges I actually saw quoted across three reputable Mumbai operators and what my own group paid. Treat these as approximate — exchange rates and Saudi hotel tariffs shift weekly.

  • Nusuk e-visa fee: approximately ₹13,000–₹16,000 (includes mandatory insurance)
  • Return airfare Mumbai–Jeddah (scheduled): typically ₹35,000–₹65,000
  • Charter flight package seat (BOM–MED): approximately ₹28,000–₹42,000
  • Hotel near Haram (3-star, 7 nights): ₹40,000–₹70,000
  • Hotel near Masjid an-Nabawi (3-star, 4 nights): ₹25,000–₹45,000
  • Ground transport (Jeddah–Makkah–Madinah taxi/coach): ₹6,000–₹12,000
  • Ziyarat tour in Madinah and Makkah: ₹3,500–₹6,000
  • Food and incidentals for 12 days: ₹15,000–₹25,000
  • Total ballpark per person: ₹1.4 lakh to ₹2.4 lakh depending on season and hotel category

Ramadan and the last ten nights are the most expensive — hotel rates near the Clock Tower can triple. If budget matters, aim for post-Ramadan April to early July 2026, which is when I went.

Step-by-Step Timeline (8 Weeks Out)

Week 8 — Decide and book flights

Charter operators from Mumbai release block bookings roughly two months ahead. Scheduled flights via Saudia, Air India Express, and IndiGo are flexible but pricier near departure.

Week 7 — Vaccinations

Walk into Kasturba Hospital, Bombay Hospital, or a recognised travel clinic in Andheri/Bandra for the meningitis ACWY shot. Carry the yellow certificate. Some clinics in Bhendi Bazaar and Mumbra also do batch vaccination camps for Umrah groups.

Week 6 — Hotel reservation

Book through Nusuk-approved partners only. Walk-in bookings via WhatsApp groups have stranded Mumbai pilgrims before — the visa requires a verified booking ID.

Week 5 — Apply on Nusuk

Create your account, upload passport bio page, photograph, vaccination certificate, and hotel + flight confirmation. Pay the fee via international debit/credit card.

Week 4 — Mahram documentation

If a woman is travelling with a brother, husband, or son, prepare a notarised relationship affidavit. Some Mumbai families also carry the nikah-nama or birth certificate copies.

Week 2 — Forex and SIM

I bought riyals at a Fort exchange counter at a noticeably better rate than the airport. Saudi e-SIMs from STC or Mobily work the moment you land.

Week 1 — Ihram, prayer revision, and packing

Practise the niyyah, the talbiyah, the tawaf circuits, and the sa'i sequence at home. Knowing the steps mentally makes the actual experience devotional rather than confused.

Departure day

Reach Terminal 2 four hours before charter flights — security queues for pilgrim batches are slower because of group manifest verification. For help organising paperwork before flying, many Mumbai families work with SmotVisa visa consultants who handle Nusuk submissions in-house.

Charter Flight Reality from Mumbai

Charter operators usually fly Mumbai → Madinah direct, returning Jeddah → Mumbai. Benefits: cheaper, group-friendly, Ihram-ready cabin announcements, and ziyarat transfers bundled. Drawbacks: fixed return dates, limited baggage (usually 23 kg), and occasional schedule shifts. If flexibility matters more than savings, scheduled Saudia or Emirates via Dubai gives you the most stable timing.

Insider Tips Competitors Skip

  1. Avoid scanning passports at random photocopy shops. Use a trusted Fort or Andheri agent. Bio-data leaks have caused Nusuk impersonation cases.
  2. Carry two pairs of slippers. One pair will be misplaced at the Haram — guaranteed.
  3. Pre-book the Rawdah slot inside Masjid an-Nabawi on Nusuk — walk-ins are no longer accepted.
  4. Drink ZamZam slowly throughout the day, not in one gulp — Mumbai humidity does not prepare you for dry Makkah heat.
  5. Keep INR 5,000 untouched for emergencies on return — Mumbai airport taxis at 3 AM rarely accept cards.

A Note on Choosing the Right Help

Mumbai has hundreds of agents — Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbra, Kurla, Andheri all have shopfronts promising the lowest Umrah rates. The cheapest quote is almost always the most painful experience. Pick a consultant who shows you the Nusuk dashboard live, gives you the booking ID for cross-verification, and explains refund terms in writing. The Visa Agents in Mumbai I worked with did exactly that, and the difference in peace of mind across twelve days in the holy cities was immeasurable.

May your journey be accepted. Mubarak ho.
