Materials You’ll Need
Medium-weight fabric (cotton canvas or polyester) — approx. ½ yard
Matching thread
Sewing machine (or hand-sewing needle)
Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
Measuring tape or ruler
Pins or clips
Iron (optional but helpful)
Tip: If you’re planning to add prints or artwork, polyester fabric is ideal for sublimation printing. One reliable source for blanks is sublimationblanksproduct.com.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cut Your Fabric Cut two rectangles for the bag body: 15" wide × 16" tall
Cut two strips for the handles: 22" long × 2.5" wide
You can adjust the dimensions depending on your use case — smaller for kids, larger for groceries.
Prepare the Handles
Fold each strap lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch along the long edge, turn right side out, then press flat. Optional: topstitch along the edges for extra durability.Assemble the Bag Body
With right sides facing in, stitch the two body pieces together along the sides and bottom. Use a ½" seam allowance. Turn right side out.Create the Top Hem
Fold the top edge of the bag down ½", then fold again 1" to encase raw edges. Press and pin.Attach the Handles
Tuck each handle end under the folded top edge, positioning them about 3" in from each side seam. Pin in place.Finish the Top
Sew around the top edge of the bag, about ⅛" from the fold, catching the handles and finishing the hem. For reinforcement, stitch a second line ¾" from the top edge.
