You can still hunt for a full-time job while you're working a contract role, giving you an opportunity to collect income you're currently not receiving
Contractors by definition have a loose affiliation with the company. It's not going to negatively impact you if you take a contract gig and 3 or 4 weeks later give notice because you found a full-time gig.
There are pathways within contracting relationships to convert into full-time roles. Not a given at every company or situation, but it is possible.
