Yes we don't need react to do this (as stated in the post), the point was to show how react can easily get integrated to start you off on your journey to extend it to create your own react chrome extension. The youtube filtering was just a way to add some flavor to the tutorial rather than your typical "Here's how to get XYZ to work".
