Hi, I am Yuya from Japan.
In this article I will describe myself.
Who am I?
I was born in the countryside of Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, and grew up surrounded by the ocean and mountains. Perhaps because I had so many opportunities to be in contact with nature, I surfed a lot when I was in Japan. Surfing became a part of my life, and my friends and I would often spend from morning to night surfing enthusiastically. I am convinced that this will be a lifelong hobby. I wanted to surf all over the world someday.
I worked as a mechanical engineer for a major Japanese steel company. My main duties were designing machines, modifying them, finding out the causes of breakdowns, and ordering repairs.
Why did I come to Canada?
In Japan, it is considered beautiful to continue working until retirement once employed, unless there is a special reason for not doing so.
In such a situation, I kept a certain question in my mind while working as a mechanical engineer.
For example, do I enjoy continuing to move forward into the future that I can see ahead? Will I regret it before you die? etc.
When I started thinking about it, I honestly thought that if I could surf, that would be enough. I think I was rather intimidated by the idea of trying something new.
Someday in 2018, I had the opportunity to travel to California and Arizona in the western United States.
There I was able to learn a lot. In terms of business, I learned about Uber (a car delivery app), Lime (electric kick-board sharing), and tesla (electric cars) etc. Especially Lime in particular caught my attention.
If we tried to do the same business in Japan, we would not be able to start because of safety concerns in Japan, which has strict rules.
So I found the U.S. stage very appealing, where unique ideas can be implemented quickly.
In terms of travel, one of the things on my bucket list was to go surfing in California. This, of course, I was able to fulfill at the time, but at the same time I wanted to fulfill many more things.
The last thing I learned on my trip to the U.S. was how small I am. The moment I saw the magnificent scenery at the Grand Canyon, I had goosebumps all over my body. I could see and feel the size of the earth and how small I am. Even if I tried something big and failed, it would be as if nothing had happened to me from the world's perspective. It made me think that rather than being afraid of failure and regretting not acting, I would rather act so much that I would not regret it.
In the meantime, Corona became popular, and at the same time, programming became a bit popular in Japan. Being a curious person, I decided to give it a try and started studying programming. I thought that whether or not I was suited for it, I was having fun doing it and that this path was not a bad choice.
And one of my bucket list items was to create my own company. Using my programming skills to provide a service style would limit the risk of failure, and programming could become my skill. And if I was going to learn, I want to learn in English, which has a lot of information. I had always been interested in studying abroad, and I wanted to go abroad. That time Canada was opened borders, and apparently there is a coop program there.
A lot of conditions came together and I decided to travel to Canada.
I don't think I can surf at here though.
What kind of programmer would I like to become?
I envision a good programmer as someone who can create code by themselves and suggest ideas to teammates, designers, and clients. With these skills I would be able to find work all over the world.
My goal is to be able to maximize my skills and contribute a lot in the IT industry. In the future, I would love to work on various IT companies around the globe. Then I would like to own a company.
but this is my ultimate goal and I need to take many steps until then. I will try to subdivide my goals into smaller ones, as looking too far ahead will only break my heart. For now, my goal for the next year is to become a front-end developer who understands what can be done with a particular language and can write code while gathering information.
After that, I will decide then.
