CVE-2025-64671 | GitHub Copilot for Jetbrains Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Most of us still talk about AI copilots like “productivity features.”

My intent with this work is different: I want GitHub Copilot for JetBrains to sit in the same risk language we already use for CI/CD, production, and identity — quietly, respectfully, and technically deep enough that security, platform, and engineering teams can actually meet in the middle.

The catalyst here is:

This isn’t about fear or vendor-bashing. It’s about being honest that an AI assistant wired into your IDE is now:

  • A high-privilege automation surface
  • Sitting next to source, secrets, SSH keys, and cloud credentials
  • Potentially steerable by crafted inputs, poisoned repos, and malicious integrations

If Copilot for JetBrains can be driven into executing attacker-controlled code inside the IDE, then the question stops being “Is Copilot safe?” and becomes:

Where does this sit in our RCE, supply-chain, and identity threat models?


Why CVE-2025-64671 matters more than “just a plugin bug”

Most engineering orgs already have mature language and muscle memory around:

  • CI/CD: pipeline compromise, artifact integrity, runner isolation
  • Production: blast radius, multi-tenant controls, observability
  • Identity: token scope, credential hygiene, Zero Trust patterns

But our developer workstations and IDEs are often treated like UI territory, not infrastructure:

  • IDE plugins are installed with minimal review.
  • AI assistants get broad file and network access by default.
  • Logs and telemetry from the dev box rarely reach the same SIEM views as servers.

CVE-2025-64671 is a reminder that:

  • The IDE itself is part of your execution surface.
  • An AI copilot is code that can run code in highly privileged contexts.
  • A vulnerability here can bridge untrusted content → developer box → cloud control plane.

1. Treat it like CI/CD, not UI sugar

  • Map where Copilot runs (laptops, VMs, cloud dev boxes).
  • Identify what it can execute (shell, build tasks, project scripts, test commands).
  • Trace which identities it can reach (Azure, GitHub, internal services).

If this were a build runner with that footprint, we’d never call it “just a plugin.”

2. Connect CVE-2025-64671 to your existing RCE language

Instead of a one-off “AI bug,” talk in terms teams already understand:

  • RCE primitive inside the IDE
  • Supply-chain injection via repos, extensions, or poisoned dependencies
  • Lateral movement from dev box to cloud environment
  • Credential and secret exposure via process memory, local files, or debug tools

That keeps security, platform, and developer teams aligned without adding a new vocabulary silo just for AI.


What I want dev, security, and platform teams to be able to do

Very concretely, this series around CVE-2025-64671 | GitHub Copilot for JetBrains Remote Code Execution Vulnerability is trying to enable teams to:

  • Baseline every Copilot-for-JetBrains deployment against the advisory
  • Roll out patched extensions across orgs, not just individual machines
  • Harden IDE policies: execution prompts, project trust, plugin whitelisting
  • Monitor developer machines like “mini production”: logs, EDR, anomalous process behaviour
  • Talk about AI copilots using existing governance processes
    • Same change-management rigor as CI/CD changes
    • Same evidence expectations as production patches
    • Same Zero Trust assumptions as any high-privilege agent

Quiet changes, clear documentation, no drama — just closing the door before someone else walks through it.


How I hope the ecosystem sees this (including Microsoft)

If I’ve done this right, then:

  • Developers see it as: “Finally, a security discussion that respects my workflow and doesn’t tell me to stop using AI.”
  • Security teams see it as: “Good, we can plug this straight into CI/CD and RCE patterns we already know.”
  • Platform and cloud teams (Azure, GitHub, JetBrains, etc.) see it as:
    • A respectful, technically accurate framing of the vulnerability
    • A bridge between their guidance and how customers actually operate
    • Evidence that the community can handle AI copilots with maturity, not panic

The intent is collaboration, not confrontation: to raise the conversation around AI tooling to the same level as the rest of our critical infrastructure.
