Passkeys > Passwords. A complete Hanko Tutorial

As a developer, I've always been frustrated with the limitations and security risks of traditional password-based authentication. When I started building my Issue Tracker code here app, I knew I wanted a more secure and user-friendly authentication solution. That's when I discovered Hanko and its passkey-based authentication system.

In this blog post, I'll walk you through my journey of implementing Hanko in my issue tracker app, sharing the process, challenges, and benefits I encountered along the way.
Why I Chose Hanko

The 0: Why?

Before diving into the implementation details, let me explain why I decided to go with Hanko:

  1. Passkey Support: Hanko offers seamless passkey authentication, which is more secure and convenient than traditional passwords.

  2. Easy Integration: Their API and Elements made the integration process straightforward.

  3. User Experience: I wanted to provide a smooth, password-less login experience for my users.

  4. Future-Proof: With the growing adoption of passkeys, I knew this would keep my app ahead of the curve.

The 0.5: Setting Up Hanko

The first step was to set up a Hanko account and configure it for my app. Here's a quick rundown of what I did:

  1. I signed up for a Hanko account at hanko.io
    Hanko landing

  2. Created a new project for my issue tracker app in the Hanko dashboard.

  3. Obtained the necessary API keys and configuration details.

The 0.75: Integrating Hanko into My App

Head over here if you're using Next.js.
Now, let me show you how I integrated Hanko into my issue tracker app. I'll provide code snippets and explanations for key parts of the implementation.

First and foremost install Hanko using:
npm install @teamhanko/hanko-elements

  • Login: I create a Login component that renders the Hanko authentication elements. It is very easy to implement here is the code snippet:

hanko auth

Hanko handles all the user flow for authentication, making it a piece of cake and very piece-full for developers 😋

  • User Dashboard: Hanko provides a beautiful Hanko Profile component which is also very easy to integrate.

  • Logout: I implement a logout function that clears the Hanko session and local user data and then requires you to use passkey again.

1.0: The Results

Here is how my final app looked liked with Hanko passkeys implemented.

The 100X: Hanko 🔥

I would highly vouch for using Hanko if you're looking to seamlessly integrate Passkeys into a new or existing app.

With it's intuitive docs, as well as beautifully created inbuilt components, Hanko's complete suite is very pleasing to implement and use as a developer.
