Using Jest for the first time? Here's all you need to know

Ever heard of the name Jest? In a few paragraphs I'll explain in detail what jest is and how useful it is to developers, specifically my fellow JavaScript enthusiasts. Let's get started.

What is Jest?

Jest is a JavaScript testing framework that was created by Facebook and designed to be simple and easy to use. It is widely used for testing JavaScript applications, including projects that use Babel, TypeScript, Node, React, Angular, Vue, and more. link

Jest aims to be zero-config, meaning it can work out of the box without requiring extensive configuration on most JavaScript projects.

Jest offers a comprehensive API and provides global methods and objects like describe, expect, and test that can be directly used in test files without requiring explicit imports. [link.

So by using Jest, developers can write tests to verify the correctness of their code, check for expected behaviour, and ensure that their applications are functioning as it needs to function.

Getting started with Jest and React

React is one of the most famous JavaScript Framework and that's I've chosen it as a starting point for using Jest. Jest can also be use in testing other JavaScript Framework like Vue, typescript and angular.

To use Jest in let's say a simple React project, you can follow these general steps which can be replicated for a much larger project.

  1. Set up your React project: If you are new to React, a recommended approach is to use Create React App, which comes pre-configured with Jest for testing link. You can create a new React project with Create React App using the following command:

    npx create-react-app my-app
    
  2. Install additional dependencies: To make Jest work effectively for your React project, you may need to install additional dependencies. Dependencies are external libraries, packages or modules that provides additional functions or tools in the development of a React project. Package managers like npm or Yarn can be used.
    One important package is react-test-renderer, which is used for rendering snapshots in Jest tests link. You can install it using any of the package managers above.

    npm install --save-dev react-test-renderer
    
  3. Write your Jest tests: With your React project set up and the necessary dependencies installed, you can start writing your Jest tests. Jest tests for React applications more or less involve rendering components, checking for expected behaviour, and verifying that the application functions correctly link. You can use Jest's APIs like describe, test, and expect to structure and write your tests.

  4. Run the Jest tests: Once you have written your Jest tests, you can run them using the following command inside your project's directory:

    npm test
    

Jest will automatically look for files with the .test.js or .spec.js extension and execute the tests within them. The time it takes for Jest to run a test can vary depending on several factors, such as the complexity of the test, the size of the code being tested, the number of tests in the test suite, the capabilities of the testing environment (i.e the speed of the testing machine).

Benefits of Jest

Here are some of the benefits of using Jest in React projects:

  1. Easy Setup: Jest comes preconfigured for testing React applications, making it easy to set up and get started with testing right away. It works seamlessly with React and requires minimal configuration.

  2. Fast and Efficient: Jest is known for its speed and efficiency. It optimizes test runs by running tests in parallel and only re-running the tests that are affected by code changes, this due to its intelligent test runner.

  3. Snapshot Testing: Jest allows you to use snapshot testing, which is a technique used to capture and compare the output of a component or a piece of code over time. Using Jest helps to capture a representation of the React component's output and compare it to the previous snapshots. This can be useful in catching unexpected changes in the component's rendered output.

  4. Mocking: Jest provides built-in mocking capabilities that make it easier to isolate components and test them in isolation from their dependencies. This is particularly useful for testing interactions with external APIs or modules.

  5. Code Coverage: Jest also includes built-in code coverage reporting, which helps you understand how much of your code is covered by tests. This enables you to identify areas of your application that may lack proper test coverage and actions would then be taken to mitigate any flaw that would've resulted.

  6. Great Community Support: Jest has a large and active community, which means that you can find plenty of resources, tutorials, and community-contributed packages to enhance your testing experience. Developers in different blogs talk about Jest all the time providing ready solutions to problems with just a simple search.

  7. Works with other tools: Jest is often used in combination with other testing utilities like Enzyme or Testing Library, which can further enhance the testing capabilities for React applications.
