I Built a Free Meditation App Because Everyone Should Have Access to Peace

I created a simple meditation timer called Zen Moment because I wanted to make mindfulness tools accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget or technical background.

The Inspiration

Like many people, I found myself feeling overwhelmed and constantly stressed. I knew meditation could help, but when I looked into apps, I discovered they often came with monthly fees that made basic mindfulness practices feel out of reach for many.

I started wondering: why should learning to manage stress and find moments of peace require a subscription?

What This App Offers

I designed it to be straightforward and welcoming for anyone who wants to try meditation:

Simple Timer

  • Choose from 1, 3, 5, 10, or 15 minute sessions
  • Set your own custom duration
  • Clear, easy-to-read display
  • Visual progress indicator
  • Works offline after first visit

Breathing Guidance

  • 4-7-8 breathing technique for relaxation
  • Box breathing for focus and clarity
  • Custom breathing patterns you can create
  • Gentle animations to guide your breath
  • Color-coded phases for each part of the breath

Progress Tracking

  • Daily and weekly practice streaks
  • Total meditation time
  • Simple charts to see your journey
  • All data stays private on your device

Calm Design

  • Soft, peaceful colors
  • Works on any device
  • Dark and light mode options
  • Minimal interface without distractions
  • Focus on the experience, not gamification

A Different Approach

Many meditation apps operate like this:

  • Monthly subscriptions for basic features
  • Extensive data collection
  • Premium upgrades and in-app purchases
  • Complex interfaces with lots of options

This app takes a simpler path:

  • Completely free with no hidden costs
  • No data collection or tracking
  • All features available immediately
  • Clean, intuitive interface

What's Next

I'm gradually adding improvements based on user feedback:

  • Additional breathing exercises
  • More detailed progress insights
  • Short guided sessions
  • Better accessibility features
  • Enhanced mobile experience

How You Can Help

Try it and share your thoughts
Visit zen moment and see if it works for you. I'd love to hear:

  • What's working well?
  • What could be improved?
  • What would make meditation more accessible for you?
  • Any features that would be genuinely helpful?

Support if you're able
I've set up a way for people to contribute toward:

  • Website hosting and maintenance
  • Domain and security costs
  • Development time for new features
  • Making the app more accessible

Contributions are completely optional - the app will always remain free.

Spread the word
If you find this helpful, tell a friend, family member, or colleague. Many people could benefit from simple tools to manage daily stress, but might not know where to start.

My Commitment

I'm committed to keeping this:

  • Free - No subscriptions, no paywalls
  • Private - Your practice stays between you and the app
  • Simple - Easy to use without a learning curve
  • Helpful - Actually useful for everyday stress management

What Users Are Saying

Since launching, I've heard from people who appreciate having access to meditation tools without financial pressure:

  • "Thank you for making this accessible"
  • "This feels like a genuinely helpful tool"
  • "I've been looking for something simple like this"
  • "It's nice to find an app that doesn't try to upsell me"

Give It a Try

If you're curious about meditation, feeling stressed, or just need a moment to pause during your day, this is here for you.

Use it once, use it regularly, or bookmark it for when you need it. There's no pressure and no cost.

If it helps you in any way, I'd be grateful if you shared it with someone else who might benefit, or supported the project if you're able.

I'd love to hear from you - whether you're new to meditation or have been practicing for years. Your feedback helps shape what gets built next.

P.S. - If you've ever thought about trying meditation but weren't sure where to start or how to afford it, this is designed with you in mind.
