This is not just "overthinking." It is a structural failure in how we process social information. We are recursive creatures living in a world of high-latency feedback, and without a way to manage the layers of our own thoughts, we eventually run out of room to breathe.
The problem is that trust is not a static object. We often talk about trust as if it were a bank account: you deposit "good deeds" and withdraw "mistakes." If you have ever been in a failing relationship, you know exactly what this feels like. Every conversation feels like it has fourteen layers of subtext. You aren't just talking about whose turn it is to do the dishes: you are talking about the dishes, and the fact that they forgot the dishes yesterday, and the fact that you think they forgot on purpose to spite you, and the fact that they probably think you are being controlling for bringing it up.
Each one of those layers is a "call" to a new mental process. You are holding the dishes conversation in your head, but inside that, you are holding the "spite" conversation, and inside that, you are holding the "identity" conversation. This is what psychologists call Theory of Mind, the ability to attribute mental states to ourselves and others. It is our greatest evolutionary superpower, allowing us to cooperate in massive groups. But it is also our greatest source of internal "crashes."

The "tail recursive" approach is to summarize the state of the relationship into a single value: "We currently have a low-trust relationship." You don't need to hold the entire history in your active memory to deal with the present moment. You just take that "state" and use it to decide your next move. You are looking for the next "base case" rather than re-simulating the entire past.
High-trust social infrastructure is built on three specific engineering principles:
First, we must lower the cost of the base case.
In many organizations and families, it is "expensive" to ask for clarity. If you ask a question and get mocked for being insecure, the cost of reaching a base case is too high. So, you go back to simulating. To build trust, we have to make it "cheap" to be honest. This is what psychological safety actually is: a system where the cost of checking reality is lower than the cost of running a mental simulation.
Second, we must avoid "deep nesting."
Whenever you find yourself thinking about what someone else is thinking about what you are thinking, you are three layers deep. This is the danger zone. In software, if a request takes too long to get a response, the system "times out." it gives up and tries a different route. We need mental timeouts. If you have been thinking about a social problem for more than twenty minutes without gaining new information, your "process" has hung. You need to kill the task. The most beautiful thing about a well-functioning flywheel is that it eventually requires very little energy to keep spinning. In a high-trust relationship, you stop needing to simulate the other person because you know the base case. You know that if there were a problem, they would tell you. This "default to clarity" is the ultimate optimization. It frees up massive amounts of cognitive "RAM" that you can then use for creativity, for humor, or for simply being present.
We often think that trust is something that happens between two people, but it is actually something that happens inside two people. It is the quiet confidence that your internal simulation of the other person is reasonably accurate. When that accuracy is high, the "recursive depth" of your thoughts stays shallow.
