Stacks are a career smell, I feel, and one of the leading problems in today's developer ecosystem.

We place too much emphasis on segregation between layers and the technology used to create them and ignore the person behind the work.

I don't feel full stack exists, for that reason. I feel developers exist and have roles to their strengths - nothing more.

I agree with the meme in that regard. People who call themselves "full stack" are missing the point - but people who believe these stacks even exist are far worse.

A "full stack" developer is one who is competent in many roles. We, as a culture, seem to have this notion though that technology skill sets are like a Final Fantasy job system with balances and point limits to what we can learn or do.

There's no balance in learning. There's not an arbitrary number of skill points you have to spend in each technology before you cannot learn more.
