Artificial Intelligence is Real

While deciding on whether or not I should uproot my well established career as an educator to delve into the unknown world of software design I considered many factors. What I hadn’t considered is the technological leap in the form of Artificial Intelligence was on the horizon. I find it a little disconcerting that it has taken me countless hours to grasp the core fundamentals of software design which only to have a computer crank out similar, if not better, results in a matter of seconds. But how capable is this AI really? Is it accurate? Is it reliable? But most importantly, what impact will it have on the job market I’m soon to be plunging into?

I sought to inform myself with facts rather than simply accept the suppositions and foregone conclusions being proselytized across the all knowing world wide web. Considering how much of that information is being generated by AI itself is a terrifying rabbit hole most choose to ignore. There is no source of information regarding the world’s economic future that is more comprehensive and trustworthy than the World Economic Forum (WEF)

The WEF is an international organization which incorporates the perspective of 803 companies spanning 27 industry clusters and employing more than 11.3 million people and 45 economies from all world regions. Even Al Gore is a part of the WEF leadership, and as we all know, he invented the internet.

Each year the WEF compiles their “The Future of Jobs Survey.” The 2023 edition is 296 pages exhaustively covering questions regarding the current and future overall economic and social trends, their impact on jobs, their impact on skills, and the strategies businesses plan to use to navigate the changes.

But I digress. I was seeking an overall picture of what I should expect in the way of career opportunities. The preceding are my takeaways from my research hitherto:
Introduction:

The good news is, it’s all good news. That is, unless you are a bank teller or data entry clerk. The role of software engineers will continue to be pivotal.

The WEF report predicts exponential growth of the software engineering sector, driven by rapid technological advancements. The demand for skilled software engineers is expected to soar, fueled by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain. As businesses increasingly digitize their operations, the need for innovative software solutions becomes more pronounced, creating a robust job market for software engineers.

The nature of software engineering is undergoing a paradigm shift, demanding a broader skill set from professionals in the field. Beyond traditional programming languages, software engineers are expected to excel in areas such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data science. The WEF report emphasizes the importance of upskilling and continuous learning for software engineers to stay relevant in a rapidly changing landscape. The WEF report also emphasizes the significance of remote collaboration tools and distributed work environments for software engineers. As geographical boundaries blur, software engineers can collaborate with diverse teams worldwide, opening up new opportunities and challenges in the job market

With technology playing an increasingly central role in society, ethical considerations within software engineering will become more commonplace. The WEF report discusses the growing importance of ethical AI development, data privacy, and cybersecurity. Software engineers will be expected to navigate complex ethical dilemmas and contribute to the development of responsible and sustainable technology solutions. The report identifies several emerging job roles within the software engineering domain. Roles such as AI ethicists, quantum computing engineers, and AR/VR developers are becoming integral to the industry. Software engineers are encouraged to explore these specialized fields, offering exciting career paths beyond traditional software development.

Notably, the WEF report acknowledges the need for a more inclusive workforce. The software engineering community has struggled with diversity and inclusion. Companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of diversifying their talent pools and creating more inclusive environments and this push for diversification will have an impact on employment opportunities.
