Andela stands up for EPIC as its core values. EPIC is an acronym word which stands for Excellence Passion Integrity Collaboration. Every company has values that reflect what they stand for. Values should be small and catchy words. As Andela’s values are four and small words, each letter has some broad meanings in it. In today’s blog, I am going to talk about my reflections on Andela’s EPIC values.
Excellence
Excel in everything you. If I can reflect on the first acronym Excellence, my thought is that you do not always to know everything. If you are stuck at some point, you can seek help from fellow colleagues in order to get better. Alternatively, you can learn and learn and if you do not understand something, you can still ask for help. Help is part of learning. My refection on this core is that if you are a long learner and you believe in improving your skills and abilities, you can absolutely deliver a great work in the end. Take away: never stop learning, seek help when necessary, and prove that you have learnt by giving a great output.
Passion
Love what you do. Loving what you do is not simply falling in love with codes but also coding with purpose of helping the communities. Passion comes with seeking opportunities to do that thing you love, impacting communities with what we built. Be sure to share your knowledge to others because they can help you to give impact to the communities they live in and the whole world. If you have got chance to learn from someone, you should be able to help someone else to learn what you learnt. Take away: love what you do, do what you love to impact the communities and help someone to get better.
Integrity
Acknowledge someone’s work. I am sure that you would be sad if you find someone used your intellectual property without even recognize your effort. At Andela, we value and respect your hard work. You should own what you do and give credit to the owners. My other reflection on this acronym ‘I’ is that integrity does not have to be in coding a certain product, but also in respecting and hiding personal or confidential information of the users of the product. Learning never stops and that is why you should always learn continuously so that you do not use someone else’s work as yours. In case it happens, be responsible of what would happen. Take away: acknowledge someone’s work, never breach your colleagues’ or clients’ private information through the product you develop and learn more to grow more.
Collaboration
Work with others to achieve more. The last acronym is letter ‘C’ that stands for collaboration. My reflection about collaboration is the union of person A and person B. I believe in collaboration because you get to learn from others and share your knowledge as well. In a team, there should be respect to others so that he works of the team can go smoothly. Be curious to learn by sharing what you know first in order to know what others know. Take away: work with others and share your knowledge.
To sum up, the Andela’s EPIC really shows what they stand and every Andelan should embody the four core values, carry them with you on the Andela premises and even outside. If andela was a country, EPIC would be its flag, anthem and constitution. Go Andelans, Show your true color!
