“You try something, it does work, and maybe people even criticize you. In a fixed mindset, you say, ‘I tried this, it’s over.’ In a growth mindset, you may look for what you’ve learnt.” Carol Dweck, a Stanford University Psychologist.
Most of the times people tend to show a growth mindset especially when we try something and fail to meet the expectations. We fail to adapt to changes and our mind release negativity thoughts and words. This shows a fixed mindset someone can have. On the contrary, there is a growth mindset which is what I am going to talk about in this post. I am going to talk about how I demonstrated a growth mindset in my life and throughout the application process.
A growth mindset is about believing that your abilities and skills can be developed and improved as long as you put in your full efforts. I believe that I have demonstrated a growth mindset throughout my application process in Andela. I had an idea of applying in Andela since the year 2019 started, the more I shared my idea to others, the more I got discouraged on how I will never make it to the boot camp. I applied in cycle 13 without seeking advice from anyone. Because I believed that my abilities and skills are not fixed meaning that I can learn and grow over time when I put more effort, that is why I never got discouraged by what others told me.
By the time of interview, I had not finished the whole challenge because I encountered some problems, I admitted my failure of completing the project and spotted out when I thought the problem was. Admitting your mistakes or failure shows that you completely understand what you did wrong and seek ways of improving on it. After the interview, I went back to the project to correct what I did wrong because interviewers gave me hint on what was wrong with my project.
I showed a growth mindset during the time of working on different challenges that I had completed so that I can secure an interview. There were many challenges to complete and I had to learn and pass all of them. I tried to find on my business schedule because I was doing an academic internship. From the responsibilities I had in the internship, finding even thirty minutes was not easy. I decided to work over the weekends so that I can finish everything. This shows that I developed growth mindset through the course of application.
My commitment to learn new things showed how I can be on the same pace with others, and it proved how well my mindset had grown. I did not have any idea on what to on the back-end of the product app we were working on, but I approached the whole project with a growth mindset where I have to learn everything from scratch in order to develop the whole product.
All in all, this blog was about how I demonstrated a growth mindset before, during the application process and even in the 2 weeks boot camp. If you believe that your skills and abilities are not fixed, you have growth mindset, but if you do not think in the growth and development of your abilities and skills, you have fixed mindset and you should start working on that because growth mindset is the only way to success.
