I Compared 6 Dunning Tools for Stripe SaaS -- Here's What I Found

If you run a Stripe-based SaaS, you're losing revenue to failed payments. The question is: which tool do you use to get it back?

I looked at 6 dunning/payment recovery tools and compared them on price, features, and setup complexity. Here's what I found.

The contenders

Tool Starting Price Pricing Model
Rebill $19/mo Flat monthly
ChurnWard $29/mo Flat monthly
Baremetrics Recover $58/mo Flat monthly
Stunning $99/mo Flat monthly
Churn Buster $249/mo Flat monthly
Paddle Retain ~2-4% of recovered Revenue share

My take on each

Rebill ($19/mo)

The newest player. Full-featured for the price: dunning sequences, expiring card alerts, win-back campaigns, and analytics. Connects via Stripe Connect in about 30 seconds. The Pro plan at $39/mo adds API access, white-label emails, and unlimited Stripe accounts. Also offers a $59 lifetime deal for early adopters.

Best for: SaaS companies that want full dunning features without paying enterprise prices.

ChurnWard ($29/mo)

Simple and focused. Sends dunning emails when payments fail. No analytics dashboard, no custom templates, no expiring card alerts. Gets the basic job done.

Best for: Solo founders who just want basic dunning and nothing else.

Baremetrics Recover ($58/mo)

Part of the Baremetrics analytics suite. Good dunning emails and analytics, but no expiring card alerts or win-back campaigns. The analytics are great if you're already a Baremetrics customer.

Best for: Existing Baremetrics customers who want to add recovery.

Stunning ($99/mo)

Solid mid-tier option with dunning emails, custom templates, and analytics. No expiring card alerts though, which means you're only recovering failures instead of preventing them.

Best for: Mid-size SaaS that wants a proven tool and doesn't mind the price.

Churn Buster ($249/mo)

The established player. Full-featured with dunning, analytics, custom templates, and expiring card alerts. But at $249/mo, the ROI math gets harder for smaller SaaS companies. No win-back campaigns.

Best for: Larger SaaS companies ($50K+ MRR) where $249/mo is noise.

Paddle Retain (2-4% of recovered)

Formerly ProfitWell Retain, now part of Paddle. The revenue share model means you pay nothing if you recover nothing, but costs scale with success. The catch: you need to be on Paddle's billing platform, which means migrating away from Stripe.

Best for: Companies already on Paddle. Not practical if you're on Stripe.

The bottom line

For most Stripe-based SaaS companies under $50K MRR, the sweet spot is a tool in the $19-$99/month range. You're looking for:

  1. Dunning email sequences (must have)
  2. Analytics dashboard (should have)
  3. Expiring card alerts (nice to have)
  4. Win-back campaigns (bonus)
  5. Quick Stripe setup (must have)

The most expensive tool isn't necessarily the best. Compare features against your actual needs, not brand name.
