5-phases of Design Thinking

insight image

What is design thinking?

design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.

— TIM BROWN, EXECUTIVE CHAIR OF IDEO

There are 5 steps involved:

1. Empathize:
This is the first stage that entails you to understand the people you are designing for. Understand what their problem is and gather information required through interviews and/or other means.

2. Define:
Here you need to break down the users needs or problems based on the information you have gathered from the first step.

3. Ideate:
Come up with thoughts and ideas that are potential matches based on the insights got from the 2 previous steps.

4. Prototype:
Take the ideas you want to develop and turn them into simple testable prototypes.

5. Ideate:
Test the prototype with real users. You are not done yet until you get more insights from the users about something that needs to be addressed. Once that is done, repeat the cycle again from start to end.

It is worth noting:

  • The steps above are just a zoomed out map of what is needed to be done over a period of time. There are no rules set that you have to do a certain thing like is the case in design sprint.
  • While design sprint is more of a recipe, design thinking is a philosophy and a mindset combined with multiple different exercises.
