When I saw this graph, my first reaction was: wow, that growth curve is incredible.

As of November 2023, ChatGPT's weekly active users are just over 100 million. By February 2026, that number will be nearing 1 billion.

In just over two years, that's almost a tenfold increase.

Do you realize what that means? It took Instagram 8 years to reach 1 billion users, and TikTok managed it in about 4 years. ChatGPT is doing it in just 2 years.

If you look closely at the curve, there are some key turning points.

Before August 2024, the growth was steady, hovering around 200 million. During this phase, early adopters—programmers, researchers, content creators—were the main users.

Then, starting in the second half of 2024, the curve took off. By February 2025, it had already surpassed 500 million.

Why? Because during that period, OpenAI made several crucial moves: they released GPT-4o for free, significantly improved the mobile experience, and launched voice chat features. In simple terms, they lowered the barrier to entry to nearly zero—now you don’t need to be tech-savvy; just open the app and start chatting with AI.

From 500 million to close to 1 billion, it only took about another year. This phase of growth isn’t driven by technology anymore; it's powered by word of mouth. Your mom, your colleagues, even your next-door neighbor are starting to use it.

But here’s the paradox: with a global population of 8 billion, 1 billion weekly active users sounds impressive, right? When you do the math, that's just 12.5%.

This means nearly 84% of people haven’t even had their first conversation with AI.

That’s the real takeaway from this graph. It's not just about how high the numbers are; it's about how much room there is to grow.
