At a glance: 181,000 stars, 56,100 forks, fair-code license, SSE + Streamable HTTP, 400+ integrations, $2.5B valuation, $40M ARR.

n8n isn't another standalone MCP server — it turns an entire workflow automation platform into a bidirectional MCP hub. Any n8n workflow can be exposed as an MCP tool that Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code can call. Simultaneously, n8n's AI agents can consume tools from external MCP servers.

How It Works

MCP Server Trigger — Expose Workflows as Tools

The MCP Server Trigger node turns any workflow into an MCP endpoint:

https://your-n8n-instance.com/mcp/your-workflow-id
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Example: Build a workflow that queries your CRM, cross-references a ticket database, and generates a customer summary. Expose it as get_customer_360. Now Claude can call it without knowing your internal systems.

MCP Client Tool — Consume External Servers

The MCP Client Tool node lets n8n's AI agents use tools from GitHub, Slack, databases, or any MCP server.

The Bidirectional Pattern

External AI Agent → MCP Server Trigger → Workflow → MCP Client Tool → External MCP Servers
(Claude, Cursor) (exposes tools) (consumes tools) (GitHub, Slack, DB)
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

n8n becomes middleware that composes multiple MCP servers behind a single, orchestrated interface with error handling and human-in-the-loop controls.

Self-Hosting: The Killer Feature

Aspect Self-Hosted n8n Cloud
Cost Free (+ infra) €24–€800/mo
Executions Unlimited 2,500–40,000/mo
Data Your servers n8n's cloud

Billing advantage: n8n counts by execution (whole workflow), not by task or API call. An execution with 50 node operations costs the same as one with 2.

Comparison

Feature n8n Zapier Composio Pipedream
Integrations 400+ 8,000+ 500+ 2,800+
Self-hosted Yes (free) No Yes (SDK) npx (stale)
MCP client Yes No No No
Custom logic Full (JS/Python) Limited API routing Limited
HITL controls Built-in No No No
Free tier Unlimited (self) 100 tasks/mo 20K calls/mo 100 credits

Known Issues

  • Multi-replica breaks MCP — all /mcp* requests must route to a single webhook replica
  • Reverse proxy config — nginx needs proxy buffering disabled for MCP endpoints
  • Trigger stops after first use — reported by multiple community users
  • No stdio transport — needs a running n8n instance with reachable URL
  • Fair-code license — free for internal use; commercial redistribution requires Enterprise

Rating: 4/5

n8n solves a different problem than Zapier or Composio. Those ask: "how do I give my agent access to more apps?" n8n asks: "how do I give my agent access to my business logic?"

Bidirectional MCP is genuinely powerful. Self-hosting with unlimited executions is the headline differentiator. The MCP Server Trigger has operational rough edges (multi-replica, proxy config, trigger reliability), but for teams exposing complex workflows as clean AI tools, nothing else comes close.
