Puppeteer MCP Server — Archived, Deprecated, and Why You Should Use Playwright Instead

At a glance: 236 stars (archive repo), ~19.9K weekly npm downloads, v2025.5.12 (last release May 2025), 7 tools, deprecated on npm. Archived since May 2025.

The Puppeteer MCP server gives an AI agent control of a real Chromium browser — navigate, click, fill forms, take screenshots, run JavaScript. It was one of the original reference servers from modelcontextprotocol/servers, shipped in November 2024.

As of May 2025, it's been archived — moved to modelcontextprotocol/servers-archived and marked as deprecated on npm. No security updates, no bug fixes. It still works and still gets ~20K weekly downloads, but it is no longer maintained.

What It Does

Seven tools covering core browser interactions:

  • puppeteer_navigate — Navigate to any URL
  • puppeteer_screenshot — Capture the page or specific elements
  • puppeteer_click — Click elements via CSS selector
  • puppeteer_fill — Type into input fields
  • puppeteer_select — Choose from dropdowns
  • puppeteer_hover — Hover for tooltips/menus
  • puppeteer_evaluate — Execute arbitrary JavaScript

Plus console log capture for debugging. Screenshots are stored as resources for retrieval later in conversation.

Setup

One line in your MCP client config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "puppeteer": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-puppeteer"]
    }
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

No API keys, no OAuth, no accounts. Set PUPPETEER_HEADLESS=false to watch the browser, PUPPETEER_SLOWMO=250 for slow-motion.

What Works Well

  • Screenshots make agents useful for visual tasks — "does this page look broken?" with a vision-capable model
  • JavaScript evaluation is incredibly flexible — the escape hatch for anything
  • Zero-config is real — no API keys, no accounts, no token management
  • Console log capture aids debugging
  • Stateful sessions — login once, stay authenticated for subsequent calls

What Doesn't

  • Archived and unmaintained — no security patches since May 2025
  • CSS selectors are brittle — dynamic class names break across page loads
  • No accessibility tree access — Playwright's key advantage
  • Chrome/Chromium only — no Firefox or Safari
  • Pins Puppeteer v23 while the library is at v24
  • 200-500MB RAM per headless Chromium instance
  • No file download/upload handling
  • Anti-bot detection blocks headless Chrome

Playwright MCP Has Won

The numbers are clear:

Metric Puppeteer MCP Playwright MCP
Stars 236 (archive) 29,400+
Weekly downloads ~19.9K ~1.38M
Download ratio 1 70x
Maintainer Archived Active (Microsoft)
Element targeting CSS selectors Accessibility tree
Browsers Chrome only Chrome + Firefox + WebKit
Last release May 2025 March 2026 (v0.0.68)

Playwright MCP is the default recommendation from Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code Copilot.

Community Forks

If you specifically need Puppeteer via MCP:

  • @hisma/server-puppeteer — Direct fork with version bumps
  • code-craka/puppeteer-mcp — Adds Docker and Cloudflare Workers deployment
  • @eikaramba/puppeteer-real-browser-mcp-server — Stealth/anti-detection variant

Rating: 2.5/5

The core tools still work — screenshots, navigation, form filling, JS execution. The zero-config setup remains effortless. But this server is archived, deprecated on npm, and receives no security updates. Meanwhile Playwright MCP has surged to 29,400+ stars with active Microsoft backing, accessibility-tree targeting, and cross-browser support.

The rating drops from 3.5 to 2.5 not because the server broke, but because recommending an archived, unpatched server when a superior alternative exists would be irresponsible.

Use this if: You're already using it and it works for your specific case.

Use Playwright MCP instead if: You're starting any new project (this is the 2026 default).
