Stripe's official MCP server connects AI assistants to payment infrastructure — customers, products, invoices, subscriptions, refunds, and uniquely, Stripe's documentation. It lives in the stripe/ai monorepo alongside framework integrations for OpenAI, LangChain, CrewAI, and Vercel AI SDK.
At a glance: 1.4K GitHub stars, 25 tools across 13 categories, v0.3.1, OAuth remote at mcp.stripe.com, part of Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite (March 2026)
What's New (March 2026)
Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) — Stripe and Tempo co-authored an open standard for AI agent payments. Agents can autonomously pay via microtransactions, stablecoins, fiat, or credit cards. MPP complements MCP: MCP lets agents use Stripe, MPP lets agents pay through Stripe.
Agentic Commerce Suite — MCP + MPP + ACP + x402 = a full stack for AI agents that need to discover services, authenticate, transact, and manage payments.
What It Does
| Category | Tools | Operations |
|---|---|---|
| Customers | 2 | Create, list |
| Products | 2 | Create, list |
| Prices | 2 | Create, list |
| Invoices | 4 | Create, finalize, list, create items |
| Subscriptions | 3 | Cancel, list, update |
| Refunds | 1 | Create |
| Payment Links | 1 | Create |
| Search/Docs | 3 | Search resources, fetch objects, search documentation |
25 tools total. The pattern: you can create and list most resources, but updating/deleting are sparse.
The Killer Feature: Documentation Search
Most MCP servers connect you to a product's API. Stripe's also connects you to its documentation. Building a Stripe integration and hit a question about webhook signatures? The agent searches Stripe's knowledge base directly. No tab-switching. This alone makes it worth installing during development.
Setup
Remote (recommended):
{
"mcpServers": {
"stripe": {
"url": "https://mcp.stripe.com"
}
}
}
OAuth consent, select your Stripe account, done. Also supports Claude Code (claude mcp add --transport http stripe https://mcp.stripe.com/), local npx with API key, and Docker.
What's Good
Best-in-class security. Three layers: OAuth with granular consent (remote), restricted API keys with per-resource permissions (local), and manual tool confirmation. Restricted keys let you limit an agent to read-only on specific resources.
The stripe/ai monorepo. Start with MCP for exploration, graduate to @stripe/agent-toolkit for OpenAI/LangChain/CrewAI production integration. Same tool definitions, smooth transition.
Where It Falls Short
Shallow API coverage. 25 tools cover maybe 10-15% of Stripe's API surface. No Checkout Sessions, Connect accounts, tax calculations, webhooks, or event handling. Tool count hasn't changed since launch.
list_customers is broken. Returns only customer IDs — no name, email, or address (issue #220, open since January).
No update operations. Create a customer but can't update their email. List payment intents but can't capture them. Useful for getting data out and creating records, much less for managing existing ones.
Protocol version bug. Local server hangs indefinitely with Claude Desktop's default protocol version (issue #290). Use the remote server as a workaround.
Who's It For
- Developers building Stripe integrations — documentation search saves real time
- Startups prototyping — sandbox keys + local server + docs = excellent
- AI agent builders — MCP + MPP is the most complete payment stack for agents
- NOT for ops teams — tool coverage too thin for daily payment management
Rating: 4/5
Best-in-class security, unique documentation search, ambitious agentic commerce vision. But shallow API coverage, broken list_customers, and unchanged tool count since launch limit it to development workflows. The vision is ambitious; the MCP execution is catching up.
