Definitely SVG whenever I can, preferably embedded in the HTML. It not only is more flexible but saves you from extra requests as well.
If you google "SVG vs icon fonts" you will see many detailed articles, mostly favoring the use of SVG over icon fonts.
If you still want to use icon fonts, though, you might want to consider a service like fontello, to only get the icons that you actually need.
fontello maybe a great choice or me. I can shrink glyph collections and minimizing font-size now.
It's a good service. Before switching to SVGs, I've been using it for years and I can recommend it without a doubt.
