To be honest, I don't think it needs to be free to be useful.

If you're using it for just your own personal site, then it is free since you don't need to activate Pro mode. And if it's for a client, then you just include the cost in your quote. Considering the amount of time Statamic would save me compared to Wordpress, I think it would probably pay for itself quite quickly.

I've heard the same thing with Laravel Nova, and I think the same response applies there. Nova saves me a lot of time, and my time has a cost to my employer. Rolling my own admin would be possible, but I'd spend considerably more time on it than if I did it with Nova.

I'll admit, if you just want to play around with something or use it on a personal project, it's harder to justify using a paid product. But if you're doing client work, your time costs quite a bit of money, and it becomes worthwhile using something with a modest price tag, like Nova or Statamic, quite quickly.
