Aging Java back-end guy. Ironically although I got my github thinking I'd fill it with nifty stuff I'd do in Java on my own time, I've ended up sticking a load of JavaScript on it instead!
Definitely having a buddy, and a wiki / team folder full of documentation. There was a process document that described step by step how to set up my dev environment, and the person who did my phone interview was also on my team & she was happy to pair program with me while I took copious notes & asked many, many questions. Within 6 months I'd gone from relative know-nothing to suggesting major architectural changes which we've since implemented. Having Ruth around enthusing about my (actually pretty meagre to begin with) abilities really buoyed me up. She was a total genius & her enthusiasm was infectious.
