Yes Ubuntu is best because is supported by Canonical company and software company which support Linux always support Ubuntu distribution. Second best linux distro is Fedora supported by RedHat company.
Also you can try Linux Mint which is using Ubuntu software packages and environment is very similar to windows.

It doesn't matter. Here depends on what desktop design you like. (Linux is very free in environment and you can choose design by your taste.)
Software is same on both.
Also you can try both in virtualbox and then choose the right what you will install to your computer.
