Let me start by explaining what eBPF is, because I remember when I first heard the term, it sounded like some magical technology that only kernel developers could understand. It's actually much more approachable than that. eBPF stands for extended Berkeley Packet Filter. Think of it as a safe way to run small programs directly inside the Linux kernel. You don't need to write a full kernel module, which is complex and risky. Instead, you write a small, focused program, the kernel checks it to make sure it's safe, and then runs it.
The "safe" part is crucial. The kernel has a verifier that examines your eBPF program before it runs. It makes sure the program will finish and won't crash the system or access memory it shouldn't. This is what lets you, as an application developer, inject custom logic into the kernel's path without the traditional dangers. You can ask questions of the kernel in real-time: what files are being opened, what network connections are being made, how long functions are taking to execute.
Now, why would you do this from a Go application? Go is great for building reliable, efficient backend services and tools. By combining Go with eBPF, you can build powerful monitoring, security, and networking tools. Your Go application manages the lifecycle—loading the eBPF programs, reading the data they collect, and making decisions. The eBPF program does the high-frequency, low-overhead data collection inside the kernel. It's a perfect division of labor.
Let's look at how you actually get started. The first thing your Go program needs to do is set up the environment to load eBPF programs. This involves removing memory limits. Here's a basic manager structure.

The rlimit.RemoveMemlock() call is essential. eBPF maps (which we'll discuss soon) live in locked memory, and this function raises the limit for our process. Without this, you'll likely get a permission error when you try to create maps.
The next step is to load an eBPF program. In practice, you write your eBPF program in a restricted version of C. You then compile it into eBPF bytecode using tools like clang. For your Go application, you embed this compiled bytecode. The cilium/ebpf library, which is the standard way to work with eBPF from Go, can load this bytecode.

Once loaded, the program isn't doing anything yet. It's like a function that's been compiled but never called. You need to attach it to an event. This is where the power comes in. You can attach it to tracepoints, kprobes, or uprobes.
A tracepoint is a stable kernel hook. It's like a designated observation point that won't change between kernel versions. For example, you can attach to the sys_enter_execve tracepoint to see every time a new process starts.

Now, whenever any process on the system calls the execve system call (which launches a new program), your tiny eBPF program will run. But what does it do? Typically, it records information about the event. This is where eBPF maps come in. Maps are key-value stores that are shared between your eBPF program (running in the kernel) and your Go application (running in userspace).
Let's say you want to count syscalls. Your eBPF C code would have a map definition like this:

This is the basic pattern: event triggers eBPF program, program updates a map, userspace reads the map. For more complex data, like recording details about each event, you would use a different type of map, like a ring buffer or a perf event array. These are designed for efficiently pushing a stream of events from kernel to userspace.
Let's talk about security. This pattern is incredibly powerful for building security tools. Because the detection logic runs in the kernel, it can see events before a malicious process can hide its activity. You can create rules directly in eBPF.
Imagine you want to be alerted if a process tries to read a sensitive file like /etc/shadow. You could write an eBPF program attached to the sys_enter_open or sys_enter_openat tracepoints. The program would check the filename being opened. If it matches /etc/shadow, it could write an alert event to a map.
In your Go code, you'd monitor that alert map and take action, like logging the event, notifying an administrator, or even instructing another eBPF program to block the operation.

The performance aspect is what makes eBPF revolutionary for monitoring. Traditional monitoring often involves reading files in /proc or making frequent system calls. Each system call has a cost—a context switch between your application and the kernel. eBPF minimizes this. The data collection happens in the kernel at the moment the event occurs. That data is written directly into a shared memory map. Your Go application can then read from that memory without a system call. This leads to extremely low overhead, allowing you to monitor high-frequency events that would be impossible with other methods.
You can also use eBPF for network monitoring. XDP (eXpress Data Path) allows eBPF programs to run at the earliest possible point in the network driver, right after a packet is received. You can filter, forward, or drop packets at line rate, before the kernel's full networking stack even processes them. This is used for high-performance DDoS protection and load balancing. Another hook, TC (Traffic Control), allows you to filter and manipulate packets later in the networking stack.
Here’s a conceptual look at attaching an XDP program with Go:

For performance monitoring, eBPF can hook into hardware performance counters. You can sample where CPU cycles are being spent, track cache misses, or monitor memory allocations, all from within your Go application. This gives you a detailed picture of your application's performance down to the kernel and hardware level, which is difficult to get otherwise.
A critical point for building a robust system is cleanup. Your Go application must properly detach eBPF programs and close maps when it shuts down. Otherwise, you might leave programs running in the kernel or leak kernel memory.

When you integrate this into a service, you need to think about lifecycle management. You might want to reload eBPF programs without restarting your Go application to update rules. The library supports this by allowing you to create new collections and replace old ones. You also need to monitor the performance impact of your own eBPF programs. A poorly written eBPF program that loops excessively can be killed by the kernel, but it's good practice to keep them simple and efficient.
In summary, bringing eBPF into your Go applications opens a door to a different kind of software. You move from observing your system from the outside to placing small, safe sensors directly inside the kernel. You can build real-time security monitors that see everything, performance profilers with negligible overhead, and network filters that operate at cloud-scale speeds. The Go code you write becomes the brain—making decisions, presenting data, and managing the lifecycle—while the eBPF programs act as the ultra-fast, pervasive nervous system collecting the signals. It takes some initial learning, but the payoff in capability and performance is substantial. You start by loading a small bytecode program, attaching it to a tracepoint, and reading from a map. From that simple foundation, you can build incredibly sophisticated systems observability and security tools directly into your applications.
