I want to talk about a quiet revolution happening in how we build the foundational software of our world. It’s happening in a language called Rust. For a long time, writing code that talks directly to computer hardware—systems programming—meant choosing between raw speed and safety, between control and reliability. Rust offers a different path. It successfully blends the precise control needed to build operating systems and web browsers with ideas borrowed from a different school of thought: functional programming. This blend creates something uniquely expressive and robust.
Let me explain what I mean by that blend. When I write Rust, I often start by thinking about what the data is, not just what I want the computer to do step-by-step. I describe transformations. I tell the compiler, "Take this list, keep only the items that meet a condition, change each one in this way, and then combine them." This declarative style is a hallmark of functional thinking. The beautiful part is that after I describe this, Rust’s compiler works tirelessly to turn my high-level description into machine code that’s as fast as anything I could have written using low-level, error-prone loops.
The heart of this approach in Rust is the Iterator. An Iterator is simply a way to access items in a sequence, one after another. But Rust’s iterators are powerful because of what you can do with them. Instead of writing a for loop, checking a condition, and pushing results into a new list, I chain together methods. Each method describes one step in my data pipeline.
Let’s look at a concrete example. Imagine we are processing a stream of financial transactions from a file.

Look at that code. It reads almost like a sentence: "Take transactions, filter for high value, log them, filter for suspicious ones, get their amounts, and fold them into a sum." There are no intermediate mutable vectors. There’s no index variable i to get wrong. The logic is all in one place, built from small, composable pieces. This is functional programming making my systems code clearer and less bug-prone.
But Rust isn’t a purely functional language like Haskell. It’s pragmatic. Sometimes, for performance or simplicity, you need to change a value in place. Rust allows that, but it controls it fiercely through its ownership rules. You can have mutable access, but the compiler ensures only one part of your code can mutate data at a time. This prevents the chaos of unexpected changes from different parts of your program, a common headache in large imperative systems.
Another powerful idea from functional programming that Rust embraces is algebraic data types, used through its enum keyword. An enum lets you define a type that can be one of several distinct variants, each potentially carrying different data inside. Combined with match expressions, this becomes an incredibly strong tool for modeling program state.
Consider modeling a simple network connection. Its state isn’t just a number or a string; it’s a specific set of possibilities.

The match expression is exhaustive. The compiler will force me to handle every possible variant of the ConnectionState enum. I can’t forget the Error case. This compile-time checking eliminates entire categories of bugs where a program crashes because it encountered an unexpected state. In systems programming, where reliability is non-negotiable, this is a game-changer.
Now, let’s talk about functions as citizens. In functional programming, you can pass functions around like any other value. Rust does this with closures—anonymous functions that can capture variables from their surrounding scope. The way Rust handles this is ingenious and key to its performance.
A closure in Rust isn’t magic. It’s implemented as a trait: Fn, FnMut, or FnOnce. This tells the compiler exactly how the closure interacts with its environment. Does it just read data (Fn)? Does it need to mutate it (FnMut)? Or does it take ownership and consume it (FnOnce)? This clarity lets the compiler optimize aggressively.
Here’s how I might use a closure to create a configurable data filter in a network packet processor:

The closure move |packet| packet.size > threshold is created inside create_packet_filter. The move keyword means it takes ownership of the threshold variable. The function returns this closure as a trait object (impl Fn...). This is a powerful form of abstraction. I can generate different filter behaviors based on runtime configuration, all with zero runtime overhead—the compiler knows exactly what code to generate.
Error handling in Rust also leans into functional patterns. Instead of throwing exceptions that can unpredictably jump up the call stack, Rust uses the Result and Option types. A function that can fail returns a Result<T, E>, which is either Ok(T) containing the success value, or Err(E) containing an error. You must explicitly handle both cases.
The ? operator and methods like and_then let you write clean chains of operations that might fail.

This approach makes the happy path and the error paths equally visible in the code flow. There are no invisible control jumps. For a systems programmer, this predictability is priceless. You know exactly where and how errors will be handled.
One of the most common questions I get is about performance. "Surely all these iterators, closures, and enum matching must have a cost?" This is where Rust's philosophy of "zero-cost abstractions" shines. The iterator chain I showed you earlier? In release builds, the Rust compiler will typically optimize it—a process called "fusion"—into a single, tight loop that is indistinguishable from the most optimal hand-written version. The match statement on an enum becomes a simple, fast integer comparison. The closure traits are resolved at compile-time, so there's no dynamic dispatch overhead unless you explicitly ask for it.
This means I can write code that is expressive, safe, and clear, using these functional patterns, and pay no runtime penalty. I get the developer experience of a high-level language with the performance of C or C++. This is the true power of the blend.
The ecosystem builds on this foundation. Libraries provide even more iterator tools, making complex data transformations simple. You can write code that feels elegant and straightforward, yet it’s compiling down to work directly with memory addresses, CPU registers, and hardware interrupts.
In the end, what Rust demonstrates is that paradigms aren't cages. The strict, control-oriented world of systems programming and the mathematical, transformation-oriented world of functional programming can not only coexist but strengthen each other. The functional patterns give you a vocabulary for writing clearer, less error-prone transformations. The systems programming foundation ensures those transformations execute with ruthless efficiency and precise control over memory.
When I write Rust this way, I feel like I’m having a conversation with the compiler. I say, "Here is my intent, described as a series of declarations and transformations." The compiler replies, "I understand your intent. I have verified it is memory-safe and that you have handled all possible cases. Now, here is the most efficient machine code I could produce to make it real." It’s a partnership that lets us build the robust, performant foundations our digital world relies on, with a little more confidence and a lot more clarity.
