The question I ask myself right now: how many companies ask for algorithms in interviews, and how many companies have developers who actually use these algorithms in their daily jobs? I think the difference is pretty big (my experience, at least), and that's the real problem. Development is complex enough, I wouldn't advise beginner to learn all of that.
