AC Not Cooling? The 5 Most Common Causes and What to Check First

AC not cooling on a hot day is one of the most stressful home problems — especially because the cause is not always obvious. Before you call a technician, run through these five common causes.

1. Clogged Air Filter

A severely restricted filter reduces airflow so dramatically that the system can't cool effectively — and in some cases causes the evaporator coil to freeze solid. Check it first. If it's gray and matted, replace it before anything else.

2. Tripped Circuit Breaker

The outdoor condenser unit has its own breaker. If it tripped, the AC will appear to run (the indoor fan blows) but won't cool because the compressor is off. Check your electrical panel before assuming a mechanical failure.

3. Dirty Condenser Coils

The outdoor unit needs clear airflow to release heat. Grass clippings, cottonwood seeds, and debris can coat the coils and dramatically reduce efficiency. A garden hose rinse from the inside out often resolves this.

4. Low Refrigerant

If the system is low on refrigerant — usually due to a slow leak — it loses its ability to absorb heat. Signs include ice on the refrigerant lines, warm air from vents despite the system running, and hissing or bubbling sounds. This requires a licensed technician.

5. Thermostat Issues

A miscalibrated or failing thermostat can cause the system to short-cycle or not engage at all. Try setting it 5 degrees below the current room temperature and watch whether the compressor kicks on outside.
