I am not a good writer, so maybe this will not be a good post (btw this is my first post here), but I want to share this with you. Many of us, including me, underestimate the potential power of ASO. I think that we tend to believe that one app will grow crazy only if we invest a lot of money into ADS, considering that this will automatically improve the app. The following analysis is my experience regarding the growth of two apps that I developed.
I am an Android developer and my friend is a backend developer (PHP) and we started, 5 months ago, to develop a simple app called Code News. This app shows news about different programming languages. It is a very simple and clean app that does one thing well (we hope). We did this just to improve our teamwork and skills. We created the app in just 3 weeks (2-3 hours/day approximately), we published it and we leave it on google play, thinking that it will reach the bottom of the ocean. :)
In the meantime, we are also working on another project with a bigger team, investing more time into it. Our current project was growing only when we spend money on marketing but afterward all the users left, very few remained. The organic traffic from browsing or searching was almost inexistent.
Surprisingly, we found out that, after three or four months, Code News is growing organically without any ads or marketing, compared to our current project that behaves like a hearth diagram. Code News didn't fall to the app grave as we thought, but it rises unexpectedly. It reached higher traffic than the first project which got investment and money for marketing. We were confused, we didn't know what we did right with one project and wrong with the other. These are the active installs for both apps:

Right now Code News has 564 active installs and the other app has 216. We are very happy to see that at least one app is going up. These are not big numbers, they are really small, but the interesting part is the difference between them.
Btw, another friend joined our two men army team and he is working on the iOS app :D. Hopefully, he will publish the app this week. We are really eager to see it live on the app store and we hope it will have the same growth.
It is clear that Code News has more potential growth than the other project, but we don’t know why these variations occur. What we are aware of, is the fact that ASO is really powerful and has a big impact on traffic. We understand that there are more to discover and much to improve in order for our graphic to reach its highest peak.
