I use this technique and love it for one reasons: It breaks the ‘flow’ of frantically trying everything attacking a problem when I am stuck, that 5 minutes break gives my brain a chance to get out from the process. When I come back, I usually can see the problem from different angles and resolve it quicker. Similarly, breaking also help me to focus on the problem, prevent me from getting into ‘the zone’, which tends to lead to a lot of code very fast but with lower quality.
I use workrave to enforce the break. When the time is up, it blocks the keyboard and screen and there isn’t a way to not to break. Absolutely awesome piece of software, I am very grateful to the creators.
