What the survey says, and what it does not On 11 May 2026, CNBC published a piece titled "Do you need a chief AI officer?", drawing on the IBM Institute for Business Value 2026 CEO study. The headline number is striking: 76% of more than 2,000 organisations surveyed have established the office of the chief AI officer (CAIO), up from roughly 26% in 2025. The study sampled around 2,000 chief executives across 33 geographies and 21 industries. Before anyone reorganises their C-suite around a press release, it is worth being precise about what that figure does and does not establish.
