Is a custom-developed PHP website better than using a framework in terms of performance?

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a project, and I'm torn between building a custom PHP website from scratch or using a popular PHP framework like Laravel or Symfony.

My main concern is performance. I feel like frameworks, while powerful, come with a lot of overhead and may slow down the site—especially for simpler projects.

From your experience:

Could you please share your insights on whether frameworks impact performance compared to using pure custom PHP?

Are the development speed and structure of frameworks worth the potential performance trade-off?

Have you seen any noticeable difference in load times or scalability between custom and framework-based sites?

Would love to hear your thoughts—especially from developers who have worked on both!
