The Confusion
Kazakhstan launched two digital nomad visas within weeks of each other in 2025. Most guides either mix them up or only cover one. Here is the actual difference.
Side-by-Side
| Feature | Neo Nomad (B12-1) | B9-1 Residency |
|---|---|---|
| For | All remote workers | IT only |
| Income | $3,000/mo min | None |
| Duration | 2 years max | 10 years |
| Approval | 5 days | ~22 days |
| Work for KZ? | No | Yes |
| Status | Permanent | Pilot (ends Dec 2025) |
Tax Implications
B12-1 holders under 183 days: non-resident, no KZ tax on foreign income.
B9-1 holders 183+ days: tax resident, 10% on worldwide income. But through Astana Hub: 0% CIT, 0% VAT.
Business Registration Gotcha
Individual entrepreneur (IP) is only available to EAEU citizens (Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Tajikistan). Everyone else must register a TOO (LLP) or use Astana Hub for their foreign entity.
The Decision
Non-IT, earning $3K+, short-term: B12-1.
IT professional, any income, long-term: B9-1.
Just testing: 30-day visa-free for 77 countries.
Common Mistakes
- Applying B9-1 without IT credentials
- Missing apostille on criminal background check (takes 2-4 weeks)
- Short-term insurance (must cover full visa period)
- Assuming B9-1 continues after Dec 2025
