OpenAI’s acquisition of io—a hardware startup led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive—has sparked intense speculation. Based on reported hints, the device they’re developing won’t be another screen or even smart glasses. Instead, it might be something far more radical: a pocket-sized “face.”
The idea is rooted in a simple truth—humans are drawn to other humans, not rectangles of glass. While smartphones connect us, they’ve never truly captured the warmth, nuance, or presence of real-life conversation. This new device could challenge that, leveraging AI to serve not just as an assistant, but as a conversational partner—one that listens, responds with emotional intelligence, and even expresses itself with three-dimensional facial gestures.
Such a design would shift interaction away from touchscreens and toward something more intuitive and human: a face that sees, hears, speaks, and emotes. Whether built with mechanical expression, subtle material shifts, or holographic tricks, this could become a more natural interface than keyboards or swipes.
Of course, imagining a “face” is easy. The real challenge lies in making it work—technically, socially, and emotionally. However it takes shape, this might just be the next leap beyond smartphones—and into something truly human.
