The tension between research depth and market velocity is costing European AI ventures millions in lost opportunity.
Innovation looks different depending on where you stand.
My journey has taken me across Europe. I spent my formative intellectual years in the Iberian Peninsula—conducting research at the Universidade de Coimbra in Portugal and earning my PhD at the Universidad de Málaga in Spain.
Now, I am building ventures like First AI Movers, Tarucca, and Desapega here in the Netherlands.
What the South Taught Me: Theoretical Depth
The academic environments in Portugal and Spain are incredibly rich. They value deep understanding and theoretical robustness. My time at CISUC taught me to never settle for a surface-level answer. That depth is what I bring to the technical architecture of our AI solutions today.
This isn't academic vanity—it's AI governance & risk advisory. When you build models without theoretical rigor, you inherit compliance debt. European regulators (GDPR, AI Act) demand exactly this kind of foundational thinking.
What the North Taught Me: Commercial Velocity
The Dutch tech ecosystem is different. It is pragmatic, direct, and incredibly efficient. It asks: "Does it work? And does it make money?"
This is operational AI implementation thinking. The Netherlands doesn't debate frameworks—it ships. It measures. It iterates. That velocity is what separates ventures that reach product-market fit from those that remain perpetually "in research."
Synthesizing the Two: The Bridge Architecture
As I lead Core Ventures from the Netherlands, I try to synthesize these two worlds. This is where AI strategy consulting becomes tangible:
- I apply the Iberian depth to ensure our AI models are technically sound and ethically governed.
- I apply the Dutch pragmatism to ensure those models drive immediate ROI for our clients.
The result? Digital transformation strategy that doesn't sacrifice governance for speed, and doesn't sacrifice speed for governance.
A European AI Strategy: Connecting the Hubs
For AI to succeed in Europe, we need to connect these hubs. We need the research power of the South and the commercial engines of the North.
This is the workflow automation design and business process optimization work that EU SMEs desperately need. Too many European companies are trapped:
- Either they're building theoretically perfect solutions that never reach market
- Or they're shipping fast without the governance infrastructure to scale
That is the bridge I am building every day—both in my career and in the software we deploy.
The Strategic Question: Is your organization optimizing for research depth or commercial velocity? The answer determines whether your next AI initiative becomes technical debt or business equity.

Technology is easy. Mapping it to P&L is hard. At First AI Movers, we don't just write code; we build the 'Executive Nervous System' for EU SMEs.
