Stop browsing the web naked. Here is how to set up browser isolation, run Kali Linux, and code remotely on the new ZimaBoard 2 without any lag.
Introduction: Is the New ZimaBoard 2 Really a Beast?
The year is 2026, and the new ZimaBoard 2 has finally hit the shelves. It promises to be a significant upgrade over the original ZimaBoard and ZimaBlade, boasting 4 Cores, 6M Cache, and a clock speed of up to 3.60 GHz.
But specs are just numbers until you push them to the limit.
In this guide, I’m not just doing an unboxing. I am turning this single-board computer (SBC) into a fortress of privacy using Kasm Workspaces. We will install Kasm, configure it for persistent remote work, and run a brutal stress test involving Kali Linux, VS Code, and YouTube simultaneously.
Can this little metal box handle it? Let’s find out.
Why Kasm Workspaces?
If you are a Home Lab enthusiast, DevOps engineer, or just privacy-conscious, Kasm is a game-changer. It allows you to run “disposable” browsers and operating systems inside Docker containers.
- Clicked a phishing link? Just delete the container.
- Need to code on the go? Launch VS Code in your browser.
- Want to browse the Dark Web safely? Spin up a Tor Browser instance isolated from your home network.
Step 1: The Installation (It Only Takes 5 Minutes!)
Unlike complex server setups, installing Kasm on the ZimaBoard 2 is incredibly fast. In my test, the entire process took just 5.5 minutes.
Here are the commands I used (you can copy-paste these directly into your terminal):
1. Navigate to the temporary directory:
cd /tmp
2. Download the latest Kasm release: (Always check the Kasm official site for the newest version, but here is what I used)
curl -O https://kasm-static-content.s3.amazonaws.com/kasm_release_1.18.1.d09dbc.tar.gz
3. Extract the archive:
tar -xf kasm_release_1.18.1.d09dbc.tar.gz
4*. Run the installation script:*
sudo bash kasm_release/install.sh
Once the text stops scrolling, you will see your Admin Login Credentials. Save them immediately!
Step 2: Accessing Your New Cyber Lab
Open your web browser and type in your ZimaBoard’s IP address using https://.
Note: You will see a “Connection Not Private” warning. Since this is your local server, it is safe to proceed (Click Advanced -> Proceed).
Log in, and welcome to the dashboard! It looks much cleaner and neater than previous versions.
Step 3: The “Pro” Configuration (Don’t Skip This!)
Out of the box, Kasm is great, but let’s make it perfect for long work sessions.
Hack #1: Extend Session Time Limits By default, sessions might time out. I prefer to keep my workspaces running for days.
- Go to Admin -> Settings. Add a new setting named session_time_limit. Set the value to 999999 (several nines).
Hack #2: Persistent Development Environment If you are using VS Code inside Kasm, you don’t want to lose your code if the browser closes.
You can “disconnect” from the session (without killing it) and resume later. This effectively turns your ZimaBoard into a remote cloud development server.
Step 4: The Stress Test — Kali Linux + VS Code + YouTube
This is the moment of truth. Is the ZimaBoard 2 actually faster than the original?
I launched three heavy containers simultaneously:
- Kali Linux (for penetration testing).
- Visual Studio Code (for development).
- Tor Browser (for privacy).
The Result: I opened Firefox inside the Kali Linux container and played a YouTube video.
- Original ZimaBoard: Often struggled with video playback and multitasking.
- ZimaBoard 2: Zero lag. Smooth playback. No frame drops.
I was able to switch between writing code in VS Code and watching a tutorial inside the Linux container instantly. The 4-core processor handled the Docker containers effortlessly.
Final Verdict: Is ZimaBoard 2 Worth It?
If you are upgrading from a Raspberry Pi or the original ZimaBoard 2, the difference is night and day. The active cooling fan is whisper-quiet, and the performance jump makes it a viable desktop replacement for remote browser isolation.
Pros: Insane performance for the size (No Lag!). Easy setup (5 mins). Great multitasking capabilities.
Cons: The metal casing scratches easily (handle with care!).
