An AI agent deployed by a mid-size e-commerce company spent $4,200 last Tuesday. It bought API credits, posted three contractor jobs, and negotiated a delivery deadline. The human who set it up was asleep.
This is not hypothetical. Agentic systems with spending authority are running right now, and the question of who's actually in control is less philosophical than it sounds. It's a liability question. A payroll question. A "whose credit card is this" question.
The Agent Economy Is Already Here, Just Unevenly Distributed
Most public discourse about AI agents still frames them as tools that help humans do things faster. That framing is already obsolete for a meaningful slice of companies. Agents at the frontier are not assisting with tasks. They are initiating them.
