If you’re comparing cloudflare r2 vs s3 for a VPS-hosted app, you’re probably not debating features—you’re debating egress bills, latency, and operational friction. Object storage is deceptively “commodity” until you start serving real traffic (images, backups, log archives, downloads) and your costs and failure modes show up in production.

1) Pricing model: egress is the whole game

The loudest difference is also the most practical: Amazon S3 typically charges egress, while Cloudflare R2 positions itself around “no egress fees” (especially compelling when your users sit behind Cloudflare’s network). In VPS hosting, egress is the tax you pay for success.

  • Customer downloads (invoices, exports)
  • Backups copied off your VPS to object storage and occasionally restored

Also consider where your VPS lives. Teams running on providers like digitalocean or hetzner often want storage that’s simple, predictable, and doesn’t turn bandwidth into a surprise invoice. That’s exactly the scenario where R2 tends to look attractive.

3) Compatibility, tooling, and lock-in reality

Both support the S3 API (R2 explicitly markets S3 compatibility), which is great—until you hit edge cases:

  • Advanced S3 features: If you rely on specific AWS behaviors (event notifications to AWS services, certain replication setups, deep IAM condition keys), S3 wins.
  • Cross-provider portability: S3 is the standard; everything speaks it first.

Opinion: “S3-compatible” gets you 80% portability, not 100%. If you’re building a SaaS and object storage is a core dependency, test the exact features you need (multipart upload behavior, listing consistency expectations, presigned URLs, lifecycle rules) before committing.

4) Actionable example: point a VPS backup job at R2 or S3

For VPS hosting, the quickest win is offsite backups. If you can target S3 API, you can usually target both.

It’s common to keep backups in the cheapest, most reliable place (often S3) while serving public assets from the place with the best egress story (often R2). If you’re already on cloudflare for DNS/CDN, testing R2 for one workload is a low-risk way to validate the economics without rewriting your whole stack.
