Hi, my name is Kyle Homen. I'm in the 5th semester of the Computer Programming and Analysis program at Seneca College. I just finished a co-op with Evertz Microsystems where I got to work with audio and video routing, QA and automation. I'm an avid gamer and hockey fan. Also, my partner and I just had our first kid, so I'll be running on coffee and sheer willpower for the next little while. I wanted to take the OSD600 course to gain more real world experience and really challenge myself and put myself out there. What attracts me about Open Source is the community, and the freedom to contribute to whatever I desire. The possibilities seem endless if I can find it in me to get involved, which admittedly seems like a daunting task!
My goal this term is to gain confidence in myself and my abilities. I'm hoping this course will open up a world of possibilities and let me branch out and create real things that anyone can use. I still don't know what kind of projects I want to work on, but I probably would benefit from trying a bunch of different things. I will start off with something gaming related since that is something I am passionate about.
With that said, the trending GitHub repo that I chose was Battle for Wesnoth. The Battle for Wesnoth is an Open Source, turn-based tactical strategy game that is playable on Windows, Mac and Linux. As I said earlier, I am an avid gamer and my favourite genre of gaming is in fact turn-based tactical RPGs. Funny enough, I've actually played this game in it's infancy back in the 2000s, and it was kind of a shock to see it on the trending page and recognizing it as a game I played when I was a kid. I never would have known it was an open source project that has been constantly updated ever since then. So now I'm actually excited to try and see if I can contribute in some way. And also play it again, it has been a LONG time since I've played it.
It seems the Battle for Wesnoth project is in need of C++ developers, even for simple tasks. That's something I think I can get started with contributing to.
