How does a small team with limited resources attract more diverse candidates?

While our parent organization is very diverse, our technical team is small and homogeneous. As we have very little time for recruiting activities, we rely heavily on inbound applications which aren't diverse.

We also don't have much (if any) control over job posting descriptions as they are basic and boilerplate development related roles. We just don't have any diverse candidates applying.

We want more candidates! Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Make new kinds of friends.

It helps if the people on said team make more friends outside their normal comfort zone. Think about who you're usually recommending for roles—they're your friends! People you know! So seek out new folks! Can't find new folks? Sponsor local women in tech events, create some internships in partnership with a local high school or college.

There's no easy path here. Everyone has to work hard, from the underrepresented folks trying so hard to the companies looking for them.

But it's a lot easier with friends :)

I started going out of my way to follow more diverse devs on social a few years ago without any specific end goal, and it has been so amazing for broadening my perspectives and always having a naturally diverse network for recruitment purposes.
