I Wasted 4 Months Being Distracted. Here's What I Finally Realized.

_Hey, I'm Priya Singh. And I need to admit something.
I've been inconsistent with everything - DSA practice, web dev projects, even my YouTube channel. Not because I'm lazy. But because I kept getting distracted.
_

The Distraction Loop
You know what I was doing instead of coding?
Watching YouTube videos about "How to start AI/ML journey" and "AI/ML roadmap 2024."
It felt productive. I was "exploring options." But really? I was just avoiding the hard work of finishing what I already started.

I had watched probably 15+ AI/ML roadmap videos. But I hadn't built a single ML project. Or finished my web dev projects. Or stayed consistent with DSA.
Just consuming content ABOUT doing things. Not actually doing things.
What Changed Everything
Two realizations hit me hard:

The T-Shaped Engineer Concept

You don't need to master everything at once. You need:

ONE vertical (depth): Master this deeply - your core skill
Horizontal knowledge (breadth): Know about other things broadly
Later: Add another vertical if genuinely interested

Real engineers aren't experts in everything. They're really good at ONE thing, aware of many things, and over time, might go deep into more areas.

I Already Started Web Dev

I was learning web development. Making progress. Then got distracted by AI/ML hype and stopped.
Why was I looking for something new when I hadn't finished what I began?
My Clear Plan Now
My Depth (80% focus):

Master web development (React, Node, full-stack)
Solve DSA consistently (300-400 problems before placements)
Build 2-3 complex projects I can explain inside-out
Participate in hackathons to learn under real pressure
Document everything through content

My Breadth (20% awareness):

Use AI APIs IN my web dev projects (shows I'm current)
Read about tech trends and new developments
Stay aware, not go deep

After Getting Placed:

THEN learn AI/ML properly if still interested
With job security and company resources
As my second vertical

What I'm Actually Doing
✅ Hackathons: Participating in 3-4 before placements - builds real projects, learns under pressure, resume boost
✅ Complex Projects: Building 2-3 solid full-stack projects with AI API integration
✅ DSA Daily: 2-3 problems every single day, no excuses
✅ Content Creation: Simple screen recordings of DSA solutions, no fancy editing, just consistency
✅ One Thing Deep: Web dev mastery, not exploring 10 different fields

What I'm NOT Doing Anymore
❌ Watching "how to start AI/ML" videos
❌ Researching "which path is better"
❌ Trying to learn multiple things at once
❌ Getting distracted by every new tech trend
❌ Waiting for "perfect" content before posting

The Simple Truth

AI/ML is not my starting goal.
I already started with web dev. So I should master it. Without distractions.
After I'm placed and working, if I'm still interested in AI/ML, I can learn it then. With stability. With focus. As my next vertical.
But right now? Trying to do both = mastering neither.
The Mistake Most Students Make
We see AI/ML everywhere. We panic. We think "should I switch?"
But the real question isn't "which one should I learn?"
It's "which one should I learn FIRST?"

Answer: Whatever you already started. Build depth there first. Add breadth naturally. Go deep into other things AFTER getting placed.
Don't go with too much things. First get placed. Then explore whatever interests you.

My Commitment
For the next 10 months:

Web dev + DSA = My depth
Everything else = Awareness only
No more "exploring" = Actually building

After placement:

AI/ML or whatever interests me then
With time, money, and mental space

If You're Also Distracted
Close those "AI/ML roadmap" tabs.
You already know enough. The problem isn't lack of information. It's lack of action.
Pick your vertical. Build it. Stay consistent. Get placed.
Everything else can wait.

The conclusion is simple:
If you already started with web dev, master it without distractions. Don't chase every trend. Build depth first, breadth comes naturally.
First get placed. Then learn whatever you want.

P.S. - I'm posting this after closing 23 YouTube tabs about AI/ML. If you have similar tabs open, this is your sign. Close them and start coding.

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm sharing this because I know I'm not the only one stuck in "research mode."

What's YOUR biggest distraction right now?

  • YouTube tutorials?
  • Switching between tech stacks?
  • Comparison paralysis?

Let's help each other stay focused!
