On April 24, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek released V4, its new flagship model. The launch made headlines for two reasons that matter more to GEO practitioners than the usual model benchmarks: V4 is the first frontier-scale AI model optimized to run primarily on Chinese-made chips, and it was released the same day the U.S. State Department ordered a global diplomatic push to warn allied nations about alleged IP theft by DeepSeek and other Chinese AI firms.
The hardware layer has fragmented. That means the AI discovery layer is about to fragment too.
V4 is not just another open-source model. It is a signal that Chinese AI platforms are building their own citation ecosystems on hardware and training data that will diverge from the Western stack of Nvidia, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Brands optimizing only for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude face an entirely separate discovery surface with different citation behavior, source preferences, and content signals.

By comparison, OpenAI and Anthropic charge $30 and $25 respectively for the same amount of work. DeepSeek V4-Flash is approximately 36x cheaper than GPT-5.5 on input and 107x cheaper on output.
Low-cost, high-performance models running on domestic Chinese chips will accelerate the adoption of Chinese AI platforms in markets outside the U.S. and Europe. That means more users, more queries, and more citations flowing through a different discovery infrastructure with different rules.
