How to Generate a Strong Password Online for Free — Customizable Length, Nothing Stored, Nothing Sent

Most people have weak passwords for the same reason: making them is tedious. A strong password needs to be long, random, and different for every account — three requirements that are genuinely hard to satisfy by hand.

A password generator removes the tedious part. The free strong password generator creates cryptographically random passwords with one click — length from 6 to 64 characters, four character set options, and a live entropy meter showing exactly how secure the result is.

Why most passwords fail

The two most common failure modes:

Too short. An 8-character password from lowercase letters only has 26⁸ ≈ 200 billion combinations. A modern GPU can crack it in under a minute with a brute-force attack.

Not random. Humans are predictable. Words with letter substitutions (p@ssw0rd), names with birth years (sarah1994), and keyboard patterns (qwerty123) are all in attacker dictionaries. A password that feels creative to you is not random.

True randomness requires a hardware or OS-level source of entropy — not a human brain.


How to generate a secure password

Open the random password generator — a password is already generated when the page loads.

Step 1: Set your length

Drag the slider from 6 to 64. For most accounts, 16 characters is a strong default. For high-value accounts (banking, email, primary password manager), use 24–32.

Step 2: Choose your character sets

  • Uppercase (A–Z) — adds 26 characters to the pool
  • Lowercase (a–z) — adds 26
  • Numbers (0–9) — adds 10
  • Symbols (!@#$%^&*...) — adds 30

All four enabled = 92-character pool. More pool size + more length = exponentially more combinations.

Step 3: Check the entropy meter

The strength bar shows four levels: Very Weak → Weak → Moderate → Strong → Very Strong. The entropy value in bits is shown alongside it. Aim for Strong (60+ bits) at minimum. For critical accounts, target Very Strong (128+ bits).

Step 4: Copy and use

Click the Copy icon to copy to clipboard, then paste it directly into the site you're signing up for. Don't type it — you'll misread characters.


What entropy actually means

Entropy measures how hard a password is to guess in bits. Each bit doubles the number of combinations an attacker needs to try.

Entropy Strength Example (all character sets)
< 28 bits Very Weak 4 characters
28–36 bits Weak 5–6 characters
36–60 bits Moderate 7–9 characters
60–128 bits Strong 10–20 characters
128+ bits Very Strong 21+ characters

The formula: entropy = length × log₂(pool size)

A 16-character password using all four sets: 16 × log₂(92) ≈ 105 bits — Strong.
A 24-character password using all four sets: 24 × log₂(92) ≈ 157 bits — Very Strong.

128 bits of entropy means an attacker would need to try 2¹²⁸ ≈ 340 undecillion combinations. No computer on earth can brute-force that in any reasonable time.


Is it safe to use? Does it send my password anywhere?

No. The secure password creator runs entirely in your browser. Password generation uses crypto.getRandomValues() — the Web Crypto API built into every modern browser. This is the same source of entropy used in TLS and cryptographic key generation.

No network request is made. Your password is never transmitted, logged, or stored. The tool doesn't have a backend for this feature — there's nothing to send it to.

The source of randomness (crypto.getRandomValues) is hardware-seeded by your operating system, not a software pseudo-random function. This matters: software RNGs can be predictable if someone knows the seed. OS-level entropy is not predictable.


Tips for actually using strong passwords

Use a password manager. A 20-character random password is useless if you write it on a sticky note. Password managers (Bitwarden, 1Password, Dashlane) store passwords encrypted and auto-fill them. Generate the password here, save it in your manager.

One password per account. The most common way accounts get compromised is credential stuffing — attackers take leaked passwords from one breach and try them everywhere else. Unique passwords per account means one breach doesn't cascade.

Don't change passwords on a schedule. Forced rotation leads to weak, predictable patterns (Password1!, Password2!). Change a password when there's a reason: breach notification, shared account, suspected compromise.
