I Let AI Design My Portfolio Website—Here’s What Went Wrong (And So Right)

🔥 A spicy tale of code, chaos, and creativity in the age of artificial intelligence 🔥*

Ever stared at your screen, wondering what your developer portfolio should look like—while AI tools scream in your ears, “I got this!”? Well, I let them take the wheel. From ChatGPT to GitHub Copilot, here's the unfiltered story of how I built my portfolio using AI—and why it almost became a digital haunted house.

⚠️ Spoiler: AI doesn’t always get it right—but it sure knows how to try.

🤖 The Game Plan: AI Builds, I Supervise

With hundreds of portfolio templates online, I thought—why not do something different? I gave my AI assistant (aka ChatGPT) a simple prompt:

“Design me a portfolio website that makes recruiters say ‘Damn, who’s this?’”

The result? A stunning, minimal layout with dynamic animations, tech stack highlights, and even a section titled “This is not another boring About Me.” I was sold. But then, things got interesting...

🚨 When Smart Becomes Dumb (And Vice Versa)

Here’s what went wrong:

  • Too Much Creativity, Not Enough Logic

The layout was flashy but broke responsiveness on mobile. The AI forgot that most recruiters don’t open websites on a 32-inch screen.

  • Dead SEO

My beautiful site was invisible on Google. No meta tags, no structured data, not even alt text. It was basically a ghost town with Wi-Fi.

  • Generic Wording

My About section sounded like it was copy-pasted from every other LinkedIn profile:

“A passionate developer driven by curiosity and coffee.” Yeah, okay.

But here’s what went right:

  • 💡 AI helped me set up the project structure in minutes.
  • 🎨 It generated sleek TailwindCSS styles I wouldn’t have thought of.
  • 🧠 It forced me to think like a reviewer, not just a developer.

💥 Lessons From the Code Trenches

  1. AI is your co-pilot, not your captain.

Let it help, but always review like your career depends on it (because it might).

  2. Generic is invisible.

If your site looks like 100 others, why should anyone care?

  3. Spice > Sugar.

Add personality. Humor. A weird hobby. A quote that’s not from Steve Jobs.

👨‍💻 Want to Try This Yourself?

Here’s what I’d recommend:

  • ✅ Use AI to brainstorm layouts, but wireframe them yourself.
  • ✅ Ask ChatGPT to review your content like a recruiter would.
  • ✅ Let Copilot write boilerplate, but own the final brush strokes.

🚀 The Final Product

In the end, I had a site that was 60% AI-assisted, 40% me—and 100% authentic. It got me freelance gigs, compliments, and confidence. I’ll take that.

✍️ Final Thoughts

AI is changing how we build. But the best part of being human is imperfection. Make your portfolio a story, not a slideshow. A vibe, not a resume.

So go ahead—let AI help. But keep the soul in the source code.
