Tesla Halts China Shipments Amid Soaring Tariffs, Delays Cybercab & Semi Production

Tesla has paused plans to import key components from China for its upcoming Cybercab and Semi electric truck due to skyrocketing U.S. tariffs—jumping from 34% to a staggering 145%. The move, triggered by former President Trump’s tariff hike on Chinese goods, threatens the launch timeline of two of Tesla’s most anticipated models.

Originally, Cybercab production was set to begin in Texas and the Semi in Nevada, with trial runs this October and mass rollout in 2026. But now, both face indefinite delays.

Tesla had been preparing by sourcing more parts from North America, but the recent tariff surge made the China supply route unsustainable. Meanwhile, China retaliated with its own 125% tariff on U.S. goods, prompting Tesla to halt new orders of its Model S and X in China.

Despite being a free trade advocate and Trump ally, Elon Musk has publicly criticized the tariffs, calling them disruptive to Tesla’s global supply chain.
