The Problem With GEO Research Right Now

I spent a week reverse-engineering what AI answer engines are currently citing for queries in the content-AI and SEO tooling space — specifically looking for gaps where the current cited page is weak and a sharper page could displace it. Here's everything I found.
How I Found These Gaps (The Method)
The loop is simple but tedious. For each candidate topic, I ran the same prompt across ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Perplexity, and Claude, logged what got cited, then audited the cited page for structural weaknesses.

Deep Dive: Topic #1 — Topical Authority with AI
Target prompt: "what ai tool helps build topical authority for a blog"
Current cited winner: ahrefs.com/blog/topical-authority/
Why it's winning right now: Ahrefs has massive domain authority and this post has hundreds of backlinks. The model trusts it by default. But the page was written in 2022, defines topical authority without once mentioning AI-assisted workflows, and ends with "use Ahrefs" — which is not an answer to the question being asked.
The structural weaknesses I found:
- No example of an actual AI-generated topic cluster
- No prompts shown
- Doesn't address how AI citation works as a distribution channel

Three steps, no paid tools required:
Step 1 — Generate your candidate prompts
Think about how your users describe their problem before they know your product exists. Put those into a list of 20–30 conversational queries. Be specific: "how do I" and "what's the best way to" outperform "best tools for" in AI retrieval because they match the model's instruction-following training.
Step 2 — Run the citation audit
Paste each prompt into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. For every response, note: (a) what URL gets cited, (b) whether that URL actually answers the query well, (c) whether the cited page is thin, outdated, or paywalled.

Weakness score the incumbent: 0 = solid page that genuinely earns its citation, 10 = Reddit thread or thin listicle. Multiply by your estimated query volume (even rough estimates work). Anything above 60 on your normalized scale is worth writing a dedicated page for.
The insight that surprised me most: the pages getting cited aren't always the best pages on the topic. They're the most answer-shaped pages. Dense, specific, structured for scanning. That's a gap you can close with one well-engineered piece of content — and it's a much shorter path than building domain authority from scratch.
