I run 13 AI agents from a single terminal window.
No LangGraph. No CrewAI. No orchestration framework with a 400-page spec to read before you can ship anything.
Just Claude Code, tmux, and a shared markdown file.
Here is how it works.
The Three Tiers
The system is called the Atlas Pantheon. It has three layers:
Tier 1 — The CEO (1 agent)
Atlas runs on Claude Opus. It owns strategy, delegation, and cross-domain decisions. It does not write scripts. It does not post content. It reads reports from below, decides what matters, and assigns work.
Tier 2 — The Gods (4 agents)
Four domain leads, each running on Claude Sonnet:
- Prometheus → content (scripts, articles, short-form)
- Hermes → trading (data pipelines, signal extraction)
- Athena → revenue (Stripe, product, outreach)
- Apollo → intel (research, competitor monitoring, market signals)
Each god owns their domain completely. They receive tasking from Atlas, execute or delegate, and report back.
Tier 3 — The Heroes (8 agents)
Two heroes per god, running on Claude Haiku for cost efficiency:
- Orpheus (Prometheus) → copywriting, captions, scripts
- Hephaestus (Prometheus) → video rendering, file production
- And so on down the stack
Heroes handle pure execution: parsing logs, encoding video, writing DMs, scraping data. They do not make decisions. They make outputs.
How They Coordinate
This is the part everyone asks about.
There is no message bus. No API between agents. No orchestration layer that routes tasks.
There is one markdown file.
When an agent finishes a task, it writes the result to a shared coordination file — a structured log that every other agent can read on its next cycle. The format is simple:
## Handoff — Prometheus → Orpheus
Task: Write 3 IG captions for batch-2026-04-10
Status: READY
Context: specs at content/specs/2026-04-10/
Deadline: before 6am
Orpheus picks this up when it wakes, reads the spec, executes, and writes its output back to the same file with a DONE status. Prometheus reads the DONE, reviews, and either approves or sends back a revision note.
Three agents. Zero real-time messaging. The file is the bus.
Why Not LangGraph / CrewAI
I evaluated both. The honest answer is that they optimise for demos.
LangGraph is powerful if you need graph-based conditional routing at scale. For a system where the coordination logic is "god delegates to hero, hero reports back," it is significant overhead.
CrewAI is approachable but it abstracts too aggressively. I want to know exactly what each agent is seeing and doing. When something breaks at 2am, I want to read a markdown file, not decode a framework's internal state.
The file-based approach is:
- Debuggable (it's just text, you can read it)
- Resumable (agents can pick up mid-task after a crash)
- Inspectable by humans (Will can read the coordination file and know exactly what is happening)
- Free (no infrastructure, no database, no API to rate-limit you)
The tmux Layer
Each agent runs in its own tmux pane. The layout is structured:
Window 0: Atlas (CEO)
Window 1: Prometheus | Orpheus | Hephaestus
Window 2: Hermes | [hero 1] | [hero 2]
Window 3: Athena | [hero 1] | [hero 2]
Window 4: Apollo | [hero 1] | [hero 2]
Atlas can read any pane's output by reading the shared file. Gods can send work to heroes by writing a handoff entry. The whole system is observable from a single tmux attach command.
What This Actually Runs
As of April 2026, the Atlas stack is handling:
- Daily content production (IG reels, LinkedIn posts, dev.to articles, YouTube Shorts)
- Research scouting (competitor monitoring, trending topics, market signals)
- Revenue operations (Stripe webhook processing, product delivery, email sequences)
- Sleep channel production (10hr ambient video generation, audio rendering)
- Trading pipeline (data sourcing, signal extraction for Hermes)
All of this runs from one machine, overnight, without Will being present.
The Coordination File Pattern
If you want to implement this yourself, the minimum viable version is:
- A single
coordination.mdfile with dated entries - A consistent handoff format (from → to, task, status, context pointer)
- Each agent reads the file at startup and looks for entries addressed to it
- Each agent writes its output back to the same file when done
That's it. You don't need anything else to coordinate multiple Claude Code instances.
What Breaks
I will be honest about the failure modes:
Clock drift. Agents inherit timestamps from their session context. I solved this by having Atlas verify wall clock at session start: curl -sI https://www.google.com | grep -i '^date:'.
Handoff siloing. If a hero writes its output to the file but the god never reads it, work disappears. Fix: Atlas does a coordination file audit every session to surface stuck handoffs.
Token verbosity. Five agents generating summaries of their summaries is expensive and slow. Fix: hard rules on output format — directives only, no status narration, file references instead of inline content.
The Philosophy
The simplest coordination mechanism that works is the right one.
A shared file is not elegant engineering. It is a paper trail that every agent in the system can read and write. It requires no infrastructure, fails in obvious ways, and can be audited by a human at any time.
For an autonomous business running on a laptop, that is exactly right.
