How to Add a Data Disk to a VM

Creating Virtual Machine and adding disks

In today’s demonstration I will provide a basic
Step-by-Step Guide to Adding a Data Disk to a VM

Let’s go ahead

Step 1: Access Your Virtual Machine in Azure

1️. Log in to the Azure Portal 👉 portal.azure.com

  1. Navigate to Virtual Machines and select the VM where you want to add the disk.

Step 2: Attach a New Data Disk

  1. In the VM settings, click on "Disks".
  2. Click "Add Data Disk", then select "Create and Attach a New Disk".
  3. Choose a Disk Name, Storage Type, and Size (GB).
  4. Set the Disk Performance Tier (if applicable). Click "Save" to attach the disk to your VM.

Look for your newly vm you created,nov25vm click on it and proceed to next page.

#Next step: Under Settings, click disks as shown below.

Click on #+ Create and attach a new disk.
Select the Lun, here I chose 1.
Give your drive a name, mine is *testdisk.

Apply**

Next, I will connect to my vm.
Go back in the search bar and type virtual machine.
Select your vm and choose connect. Click on *Download RDP file*

Provide username and password:

Step 3: Configure the Data Disk in the OS
After attaching the disk, you need to initialize and format it within the VM’s operating system.

🖥️ Windows VM Configuration

  1. Connect to the VM using Remote Desktop (RDP).
  2. Open Disk Management (*diskmgmt.msc*).
  3. The new disk appears as Unallocated.
  4. Right-click and select "Initialize Disk".

Use the #windows logo +R key together

 +R type, diskmgmt.msc as shown below.

Select the #disk 2 and click OK

*Step 5. Choose GPT (recommended) or MBR as the partition style.

Step 6. Right-click the unallocated space and select "New
Simple Volume".
*Step 7. Assign a drive letter, select NTFS as the file system, and format the disk.
*
Step 8. Click "Finish" and confirm the disk is now ready for use.

Right click on 9.98 GB drive and select New Simple Volume as shown below.

Keep the default size shown below and click next.

Assign drive letter of your choice, I chose #F drive

Keep all settings on default and click next.

*Click Finish*.

Go to Windows Explorer to verify your newly drive is added successfully.
