The Problem We Were Actually Solving
As an open-source maintainer of a digital marketplace, my co-founder and I had built a platform for creators to sell their products online. We thought we had it all figured out – we integrated Stripe for payments, and our users loved it. However, as our creators started to reach a more global audience, we began to hit a snag. PayPal, our backup plan, was also shutting us down due to local restrictions. It wasn't just a matter of upgrading to a more expensive plan; we were literally blocked out of entire countries.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
Our initial solution was to rely on Stripe's international support. We thought it would be a matter of paying a higher fee for international transactions. But it turned out that Stripe's restrictions were far more complex than we anticipated. When we tried to onboard a new creator from a restricted region, our entire Stripe account would be suspended due to "material compliance risk." This left our entire platform crippled.
The Architecture Decision
We realized that we couldn't continue to rely on traditional payment platforms that would leave us vulnerable to arbitrary restrictions. Our solution was to implement Unchained Commerce, an e-commerce solution that operates outside the traditional payments landscape. We integrated a decentralized payment system that allowed creators to sell their products using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. This gave us the freedom to operate in countries that were previously closed to us.
What The Numbers Said After
The numbers were eye-opening. After switching to Unchained Commerce, our sales from emerging markets increased by 300%, and our overall revenue saw a 25% boost. But more importantly, we were no longer beholden to the whims of traditional payment processors.
What I Would Do Differently
In retrospect, I would have made the switch to Unchained Commerce much sooner. We spent months trying to navigate Stripe's restrictions, which ultimately led to more downtime and lost revenue. Looking back, the real risk wasn't adopting Unchained Commerce; it was delaying the transition and sticking with a fragile payment infrastructure that would eventually hold us back.
