In the evolving landscape of healthcare, AI models are making significant strides. An Indian health-tech startup, Beyond, has introduced “August AI,” a groundbreaking model that has surpassed the performance of renowned models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s MedPaLM, especially in the USMLE (US Medical Licensing Examination). What’s even more commendable is that this model is available for free and has already assisted over 2000 individuals since its inception.
August AI: Bridging the Gap
Originating from Bangalore, Beyond’s August AI is on a mission to democratize access to top-tier health information. August AI is a collaborative project between engineers, data scientists, and medical experts that aims to close the gap between patients and healthcare professionals. Samarth Sharma, a key member of Beyond’s founding team, emphasized the model’s training on proprietary health data accumulated by Beyond over the years. In terms of performance, August AI achieved a remarkable 94.8% on the USMLE, outshining MedPaLM’s 85% and GPT-4’s 87.8%.
August AI’s versatility is evident in its ability to accept inputs in various formats, including audio, text, and PDF Lab, and provide outputs in text. It currently aids individuals in navigating both physical and mental health challenges and demystifying intricate health procedures. The platform is readily accessible for free on WhatsApp, making it user-friendly and widely accessible.
The Fusion of LLMs
August AI’s foundation lies in the fusion of Large Language Models (LLMs) from diverse providers. Over the past year, the team at Beyond has meticulously experimented with, disassembled, and fine-tuned a plethora of LLMs to craft the core engine that powers August’s health AI. The model has undergone extensive refinement based on 1500 health consultations conducted over the previous year, ensuring its accuracy and reliability.
Navigating the AI Healthcare Landscape
While AI models like GPT-4 have occasionally displayed societal biases in clinical decisions, August AI is actively addressing this challenge. The team is dedicated to understanding the health nuances of diverse ethnicities, especially focusing on India-specific data. Sharma clarified that August AI does not diagnose, but is finely tuned to provide accurate health-related information.
The Road Ahead
August AI envisions a comprehensive roadmap, aiming to expand its reach through direct user engagement and collaborations with distribution platforms. The team also aspires to incorporate doctor’s appointment bookings in the future. Sharma believes that August AI’s emphasis on empathy and proactive communication sets it apart from competitors like Google MedPaLM.
